Z 600 mm f/4 TC when not to use the tc switch

@Steve and other users of the Z600 f/4 TC. I just got one this afternoon and I have a question. Page 34 of the reference guide says to ensure correct exposure etc. to not use the tc switch while any of he following are in progress. auto focus, vibration reduction, exposure. Seems a little confusing especially not using the VR. I would guess I can have vr turned on but not actively focusing or shooting ? Or are these just warnings that x might happen.

I have the 400 TC. I think that warning relates to the need to refocus after the switch is engaged because the focus position is likely to change. I don’t think there’s any danger of a mechanical breakage of the lens.

I think you're glossing over the rest of the warning... "To ensure correct exposure and prevent vignetting or other unintended results"

Exposure is probably only related to the bullet points for "exposure" and "video recording". Video recording probably relates to vignetting as IIRC Nikon cameras have built-in compensations based on lens profiles that are applied before you can ever see them in the RAW files, but an immediate TC flip might complicate that? Other unintended results are likely all focus related such as flipping the TC during video recording and suddenly being completely OOF.

The simpler way to word their warning is "if you flip the TC during photo or video capture, you will have undesirable consequences", and they're purely related to photographic results not hardware problems.

I do not do video so that is not an issue. I did the tests today by just turning the Z9 off before engaging or disengaging the TC.

I generally don’t lock down the TC when I’m shooting. It slows down my ability to react particularly when the subject is on the move. I try to lock it down when I’m moving or transporting the lens, but sometimes I forget.🤷🏼‍♂️
