'Z' vs 'D'

Yes the camera's software can reverse the image, instead of the computer's software. This doesn't seem like a major selling point. Aren't you going to load the image into your computer anyway, after using the camera to scan it? Different tool, same result and still not paying $2 per image to have it scanned.
I don’t have, or plan to install, editing programs beyond the capabilities of my M3 MacBook Pro w/studio display. I tried LrC and found myself lost in no-man’s land between 2 systems (Apple & Adobe) with 16,000 images fully cataloged in Apple’s Photos. Time is my most prized possession. I simply do not want to sit in front of a computer and obsess over minute details in an image. It’s simply not that important to me.

This site has been a valuable learning venue for me and what I do with photography. I like to contribute when I feel it might be helpful. I certainly do not have your skill set or that of the majority of forum members.

The D850’s unique ability to reverse negatives (in camera) makes things simple for me. I still use it. But, I prefer the performance of the “Z” cameras as outlined in previous posts….

Whatever makes you happy, though I suspect that many if not most participating in this forum have photo editing software other than the one supplied with the operating system so the appeal of this unique feature is quite limited.

I’m sure they do…and again, this post was about DSLRs v mirrorless and features each bring to the table, not editing preferences. I am so done with this…. really done.

I disagree that this advantage you perceive is a DSLR advantage over mirrorless. Its true that the feature you've pointed out is available on a DSLR camera and not on any mirrorless camera, but unlike nearly every other difference between these two camera types, there is nothing technological that prevents this feature from being incorporated in a mirrorless camera. As I see it, the reason other cameras do not have this feature is very little demand for it: the number of users of a high-end camera like the D850 who have a large number of film images to scan and also do not use editing software is vanishingly small.

Doug…..I do not assert that it is an advantage…only a feature not available (perhaps for reasons you point out) in mirrorless cameras… that’s all….

I've been shooting with Nikons and Nikkor lenses for what seems like forever. I still have my F5. I've gone through the 'D', 'D2X' and now a 'D5'.

Nikon seems to be pushing the mirrorless 'Z' line.

I would like to know from you guys, are these a big deal that will make me pitch the D5 and my glass and start over? Or am I good where I'm at?

Thanks guys........
The D5 is still a great sport/wildlife camera and the lenses are even better value.
If you go Z then your AFS lenses will work at least as well.
Its nice to get new gear and keep up with technology but I still find myself putting down the Z9/Z8 for the D850/D5 - more fun...🦘
