From most reviews, the III is said to be slightly to moderately sharper than the II on the 300 PF (and other lenses). I find the 300 PF/1.4TCIII to be very good.

To revisit an earlier 2022 thread, Nikon released TCE14 III in May 2014 with the 400 f2.8E FL, which is indeed an excellent combination.
Version III is better than the TC14 vII, but this depends on the lens. It is better with the newer E telephotos, all else being equal especially atmospherics. The F mount Teleconverters focus more precisely on the Z cameras, which also overcomes the hassles and technical constraints with AFFT

I agree the 300of did take both 1.4 and 1.7 TCs well.

I am very happy with the 300 pf on the Z8, without or with TC. Here 2 examples

My old combination of D500 with TC14 and 300 f4 pf was my go to combination until the 500 pf came along. This week I used the lens combination with my old Z6II in a backpack when I was hiking. Here is one of the shots from this week in DX mode.
