Zoom vs Prime battery drainage.

I'd say yes, in my experience. But it isn't a huge issue.
My tamron 150-600 g2 leads to shorter battery life than my 500mm pf. The one that uses the least is my 300mm pf. But it all depends on how much I look at the LCD. Camera is a d500 so battery life is good all around. I take 3 batteries with me on a trip.
The folks with mirrorless cameras might have more relevant experience, as dslr cameras use battery at a different rate.

It could be that what I'm experiencing is just the different focusing mechanisms of the individual lenses. Or, perhaps my imagination! But the little 300mm seems to be better for battery life.

I will say that I haven't owned the 500mm for very long. It was happily gleaned from someone trading up into mirrorless, bringing it into my price range.
