I just back from south texas and had some remarkable success with the Z9. Pre-capture is wonderful and would be that much better if it worked at 20 FPS in raw.

The following image is downsized, no post.

On question . Should I have included the bottom of the stump?

I like the shot as is. Maybe I would like the full stump too, but it is not necessary for me. Well captured beautiful shot.
Just got my Z9 on Friday having ordered from my local shop on about 8 March. Much to learn but I can already tell it will be a fun jouney.
Keep 'em coming!

I think it looks fine. If you captured enough of the post to have it in the photo, what does the shot look like cropped in a portrait mode perhaps 16X9 aspect ratio? The only way to really make a decision would be to see both and look at which crop and aspect ratio worked best for a shot. I will frequently try different aspect ratios and portrait vs. landscape crops to see what I like best. Sometimes nothing works and I hit the delete key other times I will find I like one view better than others.

Rich - the emphasis is on the bird and you nailed it. I have taken similar shots and had to edit out power poles and wires etc to emphasize the bird, but it was worth it. My 1st eagle was cropped as well as a caracara and other birds that just seem to land on those high poles. (and low stumps in this case). Your shot looks great and I like the space to the right of the bird to show his direction after taking off.

I like it as is and am hoping you will share the next iteration!

Jeff, I appreciate the helpful thoughts.

Now include the cost of each trip ...

The rich variety of wildlife nearby means I take very few long trips. On Facebook there's a 'five mile radius' group to show how much is near home, wherever home may be. IMHO the best photographs are near home because I can visit often, picking optimum lighting, weather & season for each species.

I should be so lucky. For garden flower yes, but unless i limit myself to squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, neighborhoods cats, and the very occasional deer, fox, coyote, opposum, shunk, plus robins, ... in suburb situations there is much less to shot here than I suspect you have. I am in dense suburb - not my personal 1st choice but a good choice considering my wife's needs in the decision. so I, we travel
