Nikon Z9 - Firmware 5.0

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

This looks to be a complicated upgrade and I am waiting to get some guidance and recommendations before I start bumbling around with menu setting changes.
Did the table get flipped on all your settings? ie; “i menu” shooting controls, etc…

Online meeting scheduled for tomorrow from 6 pm to 8 pm, eastern. Hosted by Roberts Camera and featuring Nikon USA rep Paul Van Allen. I'm sure he'll have insight regarding new features of firmware 5.00 for the Z9. In these sessions there's usually Q&A. Register at the link below.

No kidding. Thankfully, much of this update is already written for the Z8, I just have to make a few adjustments to those sections and then I'm only left with the actual Z9 only stuff. I tell ya, a guy could go broke doing free updates...
Maybe it is time to charge a little extra and I think we all be happy to pay our share:D

I need help—installed firmware 5.00 on Z9. After doing so the shutter will not respond and that ugly green light on the front of the camera keeps flashing. I've turned it off in the menu to no avail. Can anyone suggest some possible solutions? JIM (JHD21)

I keep thinking about it - 1/3rd of the book is new material in less than a year and a half.
I’m all in to pay for your updates… time is money as the saying goes…. Another piece of wisdom “why buy the cow 🐮 when you can get the milk through the fence for free!” It’s time to buy the cow folks……. Noooooobody saw all this extra stuff coming. You bought a $6K camera and he’s busting his 🫏 to keep up…. 🤨

Turn off the camera. Remove the battery. Wait a minute or two. Insert the battery and restart the camera.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, save your settings to a card, and reset all settings. Turn the camera off, wait a minute, and on. If the problem is resolved, load your settings that were saved to the card.

If the problem isn’t resolved, I’d suggest loading firmware 5 again to see if that resolves the problem.

Kind of sounds like the self timer is active. Just guessing.

I did as you suggested including loading a fresh copy of fw 5.00. No response from the camera, still no shutter response and the green light continues to flash when the trigger is pushed. Thanks for your suggestions... JIM

 So sorry. Call Nikon or your dealer in the morning.

Just checked and the self-timer is shut off. Thanks for the suggestion.
There are two ways to engage the self timer, maybe by mistake it’s been engaged:
1. With the Release Mode Dial Lock & the Release Mode Dial - set to self timer
2. With the Quick release button & the main command dial , when the release mode is set to Quick Release Mode Selection

Steve its time for an update charge as many have said. Something for nothing is not a good deal :)
There are many things to consider about charging for book updates. It is unusual to see this many major updates for a camera and we don’t know if major updates will continue like this. Would you be willing to pay a fee for an update that only covered a small update? If you bought the book last week, would you be willing to pay for an update next week when the updated book is released to cover firmware released this week? How would you setup the online store to manage all of it? Steve has to update the book for potential new buyers already because if I bought a Z9 today I wouldn’t buy a book telling me how to setup the Z9 using firmware version 1.0. So how much money is there really to be made by charging for book updates versus giving them away? If you had to pay for updates, would you be willing to buy the book originally knowing it would likely be outdated by the next firmware update? I don’t think it’s not a straight forward, easy decision.

I’m not a big buyer of camera books as it is so i wouldn’t be willing to pay for the updates. I’d have to check, but I'm not sure I even updated my copy of the book the last couple updates. So for me, I wouldn’t be willing to pay for it though I really appreciate Steve providing them. Nikon’s not charging me for all the great firmware updates. My thoughts are the firmware updates will slow and become less major as these cameras have matured, but I could be wrong.
