Formatting deletes all settings.

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Just got finished setting up my Z8 only to find out that formatting the card deletes all settings. Is there a way to prevent this from happening. I like to format after downloading pics computer.

Something isn't right there. Formatting the memory card used for shooting should not impact camera settings at all. Sure formatting a card where you've saved your settings will wipe out those settings saved on the card but it still should not do anything to the settings currently set in the camera itself.

Are you certain you're choosing the menu item for Formatting(or using the two button press method to reach the Format option) and not Reset All Settings from the Settings menu?

Sounds like you punched the wrong two buttons. The two red buttons format the card. The two green buttons reset all settings. Or are you talking about saved settings on the card? If so then no you can't avoid that. Formatting the card wipes it clean.

I am using format memory card in menu. A video I watched for setting up the Z8 said what I said above would happen. Thanks for the reply.

Doesn't sound right. The camera settings should reside on the built in camera memory, not on the cf express or sd card. Maybe the video said it would erase stored settings if you had a backup saved.

Could this be the section?

Maybe I miss understood the video. But, I am afraid to format at this time. I am trying to contact the fellow that made the video for clarification. Thanks.

Agreed this should not happen
I have pinned delete as my top menu item and assigned this to fn3 button — far better to delete rather than keep formatting. I only quick format when swapping cards between bodies I own. Full format if I share cards with others.

No need to live in fear of your equipment. As others have said formatting the card should not reset the camera. And is not something that you can live with. So one of two things:
1) You mistakenly did a reset rather than format in the menu.
2) There's a problem with the camera

You need to find out as if it's the camera it's pretty much useless until fixed. A simple way to sort it out is to save your settings to a card and take it out of the camera for safe keeping. Then format another card and see if the problem repeats itself. If it does and you so decide you can reload the setting from the card. Or send the camera back. If it doesn't you can quietly chalk it up to "human factors" and carry on enjoying the new camera.

Post a link to that video, please. I agree with others who’ve replied that formatting a memory card shouldn’t reset camera settings.

In his Z8 setup video on YouTube, he mentions that if you’ve saved your menu settings on your memory card, it’s vital to load those saved settings to the camera before formatting your memory card. Otherwise, they’ll be erased from the memory card during the formatting process.

Could that be what you referred to in your original post?

If so, Mr. Henry did not mean that formatting your memory card erases the settings on your camera.

Hope this helps.

What HH probably meant is that if you save your settings to the card the format will delete them. So basically if you format your card frequently you need to remember to save your settings to have a baseline to come back to if you mess with your banks too much. There's no way formatting the card resets the camera settings itself.
On my Z9, I’ve saved my baseline settings to a memory card that I only use for that purpose. I bought an inexpensive CF Express card from B&H and I keep it in my camera bag so it’s handy.

Oh after re-reading all of your post here I think I get it now. You didn't actually have the camera reset on you but after watching the video fear that's what will happen? If so, as attested by all of the above comments it's not going to happen. For your piece of mind save your settings to a spare card and set it aside for safe keeping. You can just use any cheapo SD card that you have lying around. Then format away and see what happens.

Don’t be afraid to format your memory card when needed. You won’t change any of the current settings on your camera.

Before you format the card, just be sure you have a copy of all the photos you’ve taken and the menu settings file you may have saved.
