L Bracket for Nikon Z8

The Z8 is so new there are no dedicated L Brackets yet. SmallRig is taking preorders on a cage, but I don't want that I just want a bottom and side bracket for still shooting. There are a couple universal L Brackets on Amazon (generic to fit any model), such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X46YKQZ/?tag=backcogaller-20
Does anyone have experience using universal brackets like this?
I had a Sunwayfoto universal L bracket for a D750. It was lightweight but felt flimsy and I had difficulty keeping it tight on the camera. Wouldn't recommend the brand.

I used to be a RRS kind of guy but they are now working on Island Time so I switched to Kirk and will be staying there. As soon as they get their hands on a Z8 they will design a plate and L-Bracket and start taking pre-orders.

I spoke with RRS this morning and they say that a Z8 baseplate is "under development" now but can't give an expected availability date. Likely several months of engineering/production time. They say that Nikon is stingy with new camera specs prior to the actual release, so it's difficult for them get ahead of the game.

Andy, what do you have to say about 3 legged thing from UK, no?
Sure -- it is a universal plate and therefore not the best. Universal plates are not designed to fit with the Z8 and therefore are less secure and some (and yes I have some) clash with the battery and ports etc... -- so I will only use mine if the Z8 arrives before Smallrig's Z8 version. Downstream I may swap to another brand, which is what I thought I` would do with the Smallrig L-bracket for the Z9 but it works so well I have not felt the need to.

RRS "under development" == will not be hurried. Sadly same for Kirk.. Smallrig == very soon. The rest are in catch up.

I am not Andy.
3 leggedthing must have had access to pre-production Z7 - as they launched a orange colour specific L bracket almost on day 1 of the official Z7 release.
They did not do one for the Z7 II.
Ricci often still uses 3 leggegthing orange products in his YouTube videos - possibly for their distinctive look.

For those who own the D850 RRS BD850-ul l-plate and are not afraid to DIY modify it, make the stainless-steel pin a little shorter and remove some material from the protrusion at the upper part of the L. It should fit by then.

I have an old RRS L-bracket from another DSLR. I ground off the lip with a file and a Dremel, so it works as a generic L-bracket until a custom version is available. The issues I typically encounter are blocked access to the side panel and potential for twisting. Blocked battery access is rare but can happen. It just seemed better to take this approach than to try to sell an old bracket.

There can be a difference in material - both the grade of material and how it is milled and anodized. Some of these cheaper brackets are painted - not anodized - and that can change tolerances with time.

Z8 with modified l-bracket RRS bd850-ul from D850; with file and Dremel I shortened the pin and removed some of the protrusion. A snugly fit. The AF button is a little awkward to use, but its function was at another location already.

I got a generic plate from RRS until I can find a proper L bracket. I'll keep watching until someone announces one.

Ricci is currently using the universal bracket from 3 legged things. I can fit my d850 bracket as well but the side doors are not aligned obviously. I believe 3 legged things knew about the z8 dimensions and have a bracket in development. No timescales at present. I may know more in about 6 weeks

I just had a very happy discovery. My Kirk z6ii L-bracket fits perfectly on the Z8!!!!
Thanks for the tip! I do find the Z6ii L-bracket on the Z8 blocks access to the mic, headphone and HDMI ports, and to the awkwardly placed focus mode button (which many, including me, have remapped to another button), but it will work until RRS or Kirk comes out with their Z8 brackets.

My D7500 one sorta works but blocks the connector covers…I can remove the side piece if I want but I will just carry it in the BG until I can get a specific one.
