Wow that is really neat to have wild bird so friendly. Mine do come for dinner but want nothing to do with me. I actually have 3 bluebird houses built and up and all 3 have been received by couples so far. Funny. just started taking wildlife pics ( did landscape mainly when vacationing prior) in May 21 when I got my D850/500pf setup and prior to that, I didn't even realize I had Blue Birds here. As a matter of fact, the only birds I realized were here were woodpeckers that dug holes in house fascia board and House finch who made nests on my gutter downspouts... so basically anything that was a nuisance.
We have Jays (Grey or Canada; along with about 10 other names they go by) here that are so acclimatized to people you have to chase them away when you're eating when camping or they'll happily walk down the middle of the table and steal food :)

Here Spring is seems too far and we are getting more and more snow! With minus 19 degree C, every little living thing is still hiding. Consider yourself so lucky to see them!

The nuthatch and chickadee don't migrate, the woodpecker maybe and the finches clearly don't if there's food around as I see them all winter. We had 15 C of ne

Let 's keep hope that Spring will show up soon!

Spring is in the air. The house finches were singing up a storm yesterday. The black-capped chickadees and red breasted nuthatches were gloriously zooming past within inches of my head. Woodpeckers are incredibly territorial (so I'm told) but yesterday there were six (of at least two types, likely three) feeding at a group of feeders someone had put up off a trail in a stand of trees where I photographed this downy. Weather remains wildly out of the ordinary here -- was a day of gloveless February photography for me yesterday.
Z9; 300 pf, handheld.

Great batch of birds Steven !!!

Weather not much good in Brisbane, Australia. I took 750 mm out of the rain gauge over five days last week. 1000s of homes flooded. Birds didn’t like it much either. Some wet and sorry Noisy Minors. Lighting and everything wrong with the picture but just a sorry sight of the birds.

Thanks. I don't recall the exposure settings specifically but I shoot M with ISO auto and the shutter speed on these was likely in the 800-1600 range as for most of the day it was quite overcast and I was mostly in the trees and I'd want to keep ISO low; wide open at f4. I've been playing with AF modes, but likely AF auto L with animal detection on. Tho, I have 3D on f1 and often 'play' with it, so possible in use here, tho there wasn't a whole lot of real movement beyond little bird flitting. I also have single point on a fn button and always default to that I'm finding when the critter is kind sitting still, so that could have been used here, as well. Yes, I still have my D6; has seen no action since the Z9 arrived, most certainly cause I've only kicked around the city shooting, so no need for two cams.

Steven, I love all four of the images. I am surprised that you were able to get that detail with a 300mm. The detail would make me think not much cropping was involved. Great shots all. Interesting background about the birds being so friendly to humans.

Thanks. Some cropping, most would be on the finch I believe. I AM enjoying having a camera with a fat number of megapixels :) But these were all shot near feeders people have placed along wooded river trails so I was able to get close by simply standing nearby and staying still for long enough that the birds would all come back and perch on branches close to the feeders.
