D850 + two 128GB Sony XQD cards, plus (as Steve said) the fastest SD in the other slot (Sandisk)

Size: with XQD, I no longer feel the need to heed the "eggs not all in one basket" rule in respect to size, because they format is so robust *and* because I always have a 2nd slot being written to for backup (apologies to the Z users with 1 slot). So I get large and it usually works all day. There's another in the bag in case I do fill one up and need to take it out to copy it to a back-up device. Lastly, I rotate the 2 XQDs (all cards will die some day, so having two doubles the life of each if you rotate).

The D850 still has not received the firmware update for CFExpress yet though.

If they came out with a D850 replacement that had two XQD / CFExpress slots (no SD), that would be a strong reason to upgrade for me.

Sadly, I remember as a very young and naïve fellow, using a mainframe computer that took up a whole room and data was input using a punch card system. Now the iphone in my pocket is a billion times more powerful and capable.
I too remember punch cards and huge platen drives. AN/FYN-7 largest computers ever built. Used in the SAGE air defense system. Semi-automatic Ground Environment. .

The three bodies I use ... D850 with MB-D18 battery pack with big EN-EL 18c battery this gives me the maximum frame rate in the D850. D500 with the MB-D17 battery pack and the EN-EL 18a or 18b battery. D500 without the battery pack. I shoot set on CH 99% of the time. Since I shoot wildlife, birds in flight etc.. the majority of the time write speeds are very important to me. I use Delkin Devices Premium XQD 64GB ... my SD card slot is used for overflow and is a Sony G (299mb write speed) 64 GB in the 850 and 32 or 64 GB in the D500's (or a SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB got a good buy). I also have extra XQD and and SD cards in my card/battery cases in the bags or my pocket.

I am with you on wish I had 2 XQD slots in my 850 and my 500 :)

The D850 holds a XQD and a SD slot. My problem with the XQD is that for a long time it was only available from Sony and it is a bit pricey. Also Sony made the only card reader and it is not always immediately recognized by my computer. The XQD is faster than the CF cards that are now disappearing from new cameras and, both cards are very study with enclosed contact points, unlike the SD cards. That being said, I use the SD card in my D850 in preference to the XQD. Also SD cards are easy to find in stores while XQD cards are available only in certain shops. I am glad that Nikon doesn't rely only on XQD cards in its high-end DSLRs.

I am curious as to if you have a go to brand of card or buy based on price at the time?

Do you have a preferred size of card you use?

Do the read and write speeds matter to you when you buy a card?
Lexarr and SanDisk both have high quality cards. There are some other good brands. Fast cards for video and when using the continuous shots mode. Fast cards also load into the computer faster. If you do landscapes and portraits speed may not be important.

I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone say they use ProGrade.

I also have Sony XQD and SD Tough cards. I am seeing a lot more options in brand and speed for the CFExpress cards but none of my Nikon other than the Z6 have been upgraded yet. I don't plan on investing in those cards until the D850 can take them.
