Thank you. It certainly is a good idea to take every precaution.Wow, that is quite an injury, hope it heals well and quickly.
Like you I too like to hike for my photography, often many miles at a time, and fortunately I've never been injured to the extent that I needed help. But, part of that is knowing your limitations and not putting oneself in a position to be injured. I'm 63 and diabetic so my injuries definitely heal slower than the normal person.
One thing to keep in mind, if one is off the beaten path it does not take much distance to be in a position where no one will find you. And I've also hiked established trails where I never see another person for the entire hike, some are not well traveled. I carry a GPS to help me navigate and stay on the trail, and I may upgrade to one that has communication capability to add a level of safety.
Thank youUGH! I hope you heal quickly--that looks swollen and painful! Thanks for the reminder. I tend to think I can do anything, but falls can happen in a second
Thank youVery sorry to read about your mishap. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thank youWow Steven. So sorry to hear (and see) this. I'm 71 so...thank you for the reminder. There is a meme that floats around about old men's minds thinking they still have young men's bodies. Prayers for a quick and complete recovery. PT is going to be your friend, but your Dr has probably already drilled you on that.
Thank you and yes there have been some very good pointers on here from membersSorry to hear about your accident, and I wish you a rapid recovery. You certainly mention one of the most important safety tips. When going out alone, be sure to let someone know when and where you are going!
Thank youSo sorry this happened to you. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I wanted to make this post because of something that recently happened that really put things into perspective for me. I think we all need to make someone aware of where we are and have some form of communication in case of an accident. I recently had a fall and broke my foot as well as ruptured some tendons. I always carry an apple AirTag and whatever bag I have with me and if I’m somewhere extremely remote, I share my location with my wife once I arrive. I always carry a small first aid kit with me and have had to use it a few times over the years. Normally when I go out to shoot, I will walk anywhere from 1-5 miles and sometimes that is in very remote areas. I just turned 51 years old in December and I found out I don’t bounce back quite as well as I used to lol. Luckily when I had the fall and injured my foot, I was fairly close to home, but I was still over a mile from my truck. There was no one around to help, but I was able to drag my foot and get myself back to a parking lot so my wife could pick me up. I have also had some very close calls with poisonous snakes over the years as well as several bee stings. Wildlife photography is amazing and one of the best hobbies a person could have. Haven’t said that, there are definitely some inherent risks that go along with it. Luckily I am very fit for my age and should heal fairly quickly, but it is definitely going to be a long road.

Ouch heal fast ... the newer iPhones have a gps satellite phone sos emergency notification built in now why I updated to the 15pro.To be honest, I’m not exactly sure. I know several companies make GPS devices as you can get to reach people in case of emergency that I’ve looked to in the past but being an Apple user I just found these to be cheaper and easier. It seems like they would work with Other brands, but I’ll check into that.
It works to well sometimes. Our ski patrol at Bogus Basin and the emergency services dispatch in town have asked apple watch users to turn this feature off while skiing because they are getting overwhelmed with calls from normal ski falls and it is causing delays in getting real emergency calls. In addition to Apple Airtags I like the feature on my Apple Watch that can detect a fall and if you do not cancel the fall detection when prompted it can initiate a call, after a short period, to whoever you have set as a contact.
Thank you. I still have the 13 pro. I don’t upgrade as often as I used to. Seems like there’s very little difference anymore even skipping a couple generations.Ouch heal fast ... the newer iPhones have a gps satellite phone sos emergency notification built in now why I updated to the 15pro.
13 is where I came from I was checking out spot and a few other satellite capable devices for our many what cell service areas and those times I am over 50 miles from the next human ... except for my wife in the same vehicle sometimes And then this update came along and I went that way instead when apple had a good trade in sale.Thank you. I most likely will upgrade to the 16 later in the year when they’re good and cheap13 is where I came from I was checking out spot and a few other satellite capable devices for our many what cell service areas and those times I am over 50 miles from the next human ... except for my wife in the same vehicle sometimes And then this update came along and I went that way instead when apple had a good trade in sale.
Thank you. I definitely would have never thought this would have happened when it did. Sunny day just walking along and an hour later in urgent care lol. That's not a good start to the new year.
This has certainly raised my awareness around personal safety - Thanks for posting.
Wishing you all the best for your recovery
Thank you. I wasn’t aware of that. I thought the AirTag would ping off my phone and give my location thru my wife’s phone since I shared. I haven’t tried it where there’s no service at all yet. I will definitely try it as soon as I’m wellJust wanted to make sure you know that Airtags are not going to help you if there is no cell service or internet service around. Also will not help if your cell phone or someone elses cellphone is not within blue tooth range.. about 30 feet. Not sure where you live but in Idaho there are HUGE areas where the only thing that will help is a garmin like device. I have a garmin and it does have a monthly fee but only about $12 when I signed up.
