Buying gear from KEH....

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

For only a $100.00 difference may I suggest contacting Bozeman Camera and Repair in Bozeman Montana. Normally has pretty good stock both used and new. No sales tax. Always had good experience, ask for Marshall the owner.

Alan, Florida does have a state sales tax. However, B&H has no physical location in Florida, so they don't charge sales tax on items shipped to Florida. It is then up to the purchaser to file appropriate paperwork with the State of Florida and remit the appropriate taxes. Florida has recently passed legislation concerning this and I expect that soon we'lll see legal action taken by the state to recoup some of the unpaid taxes.
I believe that Florida just recently passed a state bill (has been in the works for years) that requires the retailer to collect Florida state sales tax.

B&H has no physical presence in Illinois, but B&H charges me sales tax (without the Payboo card).

Illinois is a state that has what's called an 'Economic Nexus' which requires retailers that do business at or over a defined annual sales volume in dollars to collect and pay sales tax on online sales even if there's no physical presence in the state.

This article explains it: https://smallbiztrends.com/2019/01/list-of-states-with-internet-sales-tax.html

And here's a list of states that have these Economic Nexus laws in place from that article:

It is more than just those states. The cutoffs vary, but the list goes on. I expect all states with sales tax to join the list as time goes on.

What is this "sales tax". Here in the UK the tax is already on the goods so the price you see on the label is what you pay. I am surprised thje USA don't have the same system

Tea of course has no tax, thanks to you Brits!

Sales tax is determined by the states and counties. So it varies based on what state and what county your are in. Florida has no income tax, they make up for that with the sales tax for all the tourists that come here. No income tax is a big advantage to living in Florida.

When I sold online…a business was only required to collect sales tax when the business has a physical location in that state. I believe I saw something where that changed a year ago or so. Still though, B&H doesn't charge sales tax and most Mom & Pop stores don't either. KEH charges sales tax and MBP does not.

On another note, has anyone ever purchased direct from Nikon's site? The camera is showing in-stock now but the grip is not...... Still if I buy used I basically get the grip for free....savings of around $300.
BH and MBP now charge sales tax. Any of the online sellers have to.

I do enjoy how this topic got completely off topic about sales tax.

Anyways, thanks for everyone’s input on the resellers. I will most likely buy from MBP as I like they call out the shutter counts.

I used the Nikon Trade Up program to trade my Z6 for a Z6ii and I ordered something else from them some years ago so here is my experience. If they have the item in stock I think you will be ok. What I had a problem with is that my Z6ii's wait was about 2 months, they authorized my credit card and then when the item was finally available for shipment the authorization had expired and the credit card was declined. There wasn't a problem with the card and I have never had that happen with any other credit card transaction that was delayed for several months. I received three emails within about 10 seconds, the first from Nikon that there was a problem with my credit card, the second from Nikon that the order was cancelled, and the third from my credit card company asking me to approve the charge. It took a couple of hours on the phone with Nikon to get them to correct the issue and get the item shipped.

In my earlier transaction I had an item on backorder for about 4 months. Between the time I ordered the item and it being available I received a new credit card number. Nikon told me there was no way to change the credit card number tied to the order and that I would have to cancel the order and place a new order. It took me several hours on the phone to get this issue corrected as well. I have had this happen with other orders in the past with other companies and I did not have any issues changing card numbers with them.

D500. I have been waiting for a new D500 for the last 2 months. This would be a second D500 body. Want the ability to swap between lenses easily when in the field. Figured it would hold me over another 3 years until Nikon decides to release the D500 equivalent in the Z format.
I bought my D5oo from Mpb 754 clicks for 1100.00 bucks. Still using it and it was graded like new. It was. Came with box warranty card and everything as new. I bought it right before the covid-19 shutdown. It was shipped the last day they were open. Lol. I have also sold to them and KEH. I bought my d3s from KEH. Very happy with both companies.

" and doesn't charge tax like KEH "

Any business selling to individuals in a state with sales tax is required to collect and pay sales tax to that state depending on that state's sale tax laws.
Missouri does not charge sales tax for online purchases. I've saved hundreds of dollars buying from Adorama, and B&H. In a lot of cases enough to justify new over used. The only place that ever charges me sales tax and that's occasionally online is Amazon. I guess that depends on where they're sending it from. If it's from within the state then I pay sales tax.

Hi all!

Just curious if anyone has any experience with buying gear from KEH and their rating system? Also any experience selling gear to KEH?

Thanks.
I have never purchased from KEH and only sold to them at a local camera store event. I recently sold some cameras and lenses and got estimates from KEH and B&H ... B&H estimate was higher and so sent it to them. Not only was their initial estimate higher than KEH but they actually paid $500 more than their estimate.

I have only purchased directly from Nikon once and that was the refurbished 600 f/4 E that I just recently purchased when they had a 10% off sale on refurbished. So far so good.

Price is a little higher now....

I live in New Zealand, and have purchased from both B&H and Adorama with great success. Obviously I don't get charged any US State taxes, but all online vendors worldwide are now required to collect NZ GST (Sales Tax) and repatriate it back to he New Zealand tax authority. B&H recently provided excellent delivery service via DHL, and when they delivered me a faulty Samyang lens, the pre-paid return service was also outstanding.
