Camera Gear Storage - what do you do?

I just had a piled up mess in a corner of the living room, no room in my cluttered office/computer area for anything else. We recently picked up this pantry cabinet from a liquidator for a very reasonable cost. The top holds cameras and lenses, the drawer batteries and chargers along with other accessories. The bottom is for other items.

I used to store my items in humidity controlled cases but since going to mirrorless I use an antique wardrobe so as to throw any thieves off in case of a break-in.

I keep it all in the closet or in a bag of some sort in my office. I have a humidity gauge and the house is never a problem, outside is another story. Myrtle Beach and most of South Carolina is brutal in the summer, the humidity is nuts, but inside my home it's fine. 🤷‍♂️

I bought a lateral 2-drawer cabinet on Craigslist and it makes it easy to see and grab and item and its top serves as a platform for a printer and two NAS boxes and router. File cabinets in general work well for storing items and on the used market they are sold for a quarter the price for a new one. I have the one in the office and two more in the garage that I use for lighting equipment and my power tools.

I rent a small house so my camera gear currently lives in kitchen cabinets. Because where I live has an earthquake every once in a great while, my goal is to get a Pelican case or two to better safeguard my gear in case a substantial earthquake ever happens. I live an hour north of Yellowstone, so you never know... Of course nothing is guaranteed to be earthquake proof, but storing my gear in Pelican case(s) would be way better than kitchen cabinets! My gear currently consists of: Z8, Z9, Z50mm f/1.8, Z24-120mm f/4, Z100-400mm f/4.5-5.6, Z180-600mm f/5.6-6.3, Z400mm f/4.5, Z800mm f/6.3, ZTC-1.4x, and ZTC-2.0x. I haven't researched Pelican's case lineup very thoroughly yet, but I'm guessing that the Z800mm might need its own case and then the rest of my gear in another case. I store all of my Nikon boxes (except the Z800mm's) in a Rubbermaid Roughneck storage container that I keep in my very dry basement. Abinoone: Make sure to let us know what you decide to better organize and safeguard your gear.

I had shelves set up in my closet for camera gear, but then had to put a dog crate in the closet and I can't get to the shelves (no, I don't keep my dog in a closet! There aren't any doors on the closet so it's like an alcove. Small living space and all...). So the gear sits on top of the dog crate in pastic bins. I keep thinking that I should set up something better, but for now it is what it is.

I would worry about moisture and mold/fungi damage to lenses with them stored in a room where there is a lot of humidity as with a kitchen. Plastic bins with lids under your bed would be a better choice.

Boxes on shelves in the office for extra stuff…but bodies with lenses mounted are on the couch near the lanai doors overlooking the pond with a bin under the couch for more.
