CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, starts a week from today (Monday Jan 11). With Photokina canceled, this is (I think) about the only major electronics show left, so I think we'll see some announcements from Nikon Canon, Sony etc. What do you think we'll see?

For Sony, I think we'll see either an a9iii, an A74, or maybe both. Probably a new lens or two as well.

For Nikon, I wonder if we'll see something like a Z30 and maybe a D850 replacement. Not sure on lenses, but I'd love to see that new 100-400 or 200-600 :)

For Canon and the rest, no idea at all.

Your thoughts?

I'll stick to DX, and I'd rather see a Z60 rather than a Z30. A camera closer to the D500/D7500 with improved AF.

And I'd quite like to see an update to the D500 and/or the D7500. But that's probably something for the future.

Wishful thinking, I know.

Agree - I'd much rather see a high-end mirrorless DX, but I haven't heard any rumors yet. I think I did hear a rumor about a D500 replacement though. A D500 with the D6 AF system wold be a potent camera for action!

I have not seen any mention on a new D500.
Think Nikon has been to busy with the Z's & hopefully very soon the Nikon D880.
Closings their Japanese factory.
I heard Canon moved to factory's to Japan could a very interesting future for them.

Now that as of today I am comfortably set with D850, D500, 500pf and 300pf all four should see incredible upgrades ;)

I think the D880 is most likely at this stage - that camera must have been ready for a year or more - it shouldn't be too challenging to graft the Z7 mirrorless benefits into a D850, unless they had to hit reset to incorporate the gains from the Z7II, especially the dual processor. Now if they want the D880 to be as much a game changer as the D850 was, they have a tall order in front of them (taking the D850, Z7ii and mashing them as seamlessly as Canon did in the 1DX mk3) - I can't imagine they'll go that far but that would be a strong statement that they intend to remain technology leaders in DSLRs while everybody else jumps ship.
I don't know if we'll ever see a D500 upgrade - considering how long it took to make the D500 we know Nikon sees APSC more as a necessary evil more than a profit sanctuary; I imagine they'll eventually want to create a Z80 when they have all the AF tweaking figured out and they can trickle it down easily but I don't know that they'll upgrade the D500 - I am sure they have to make R&D priorities and I can't see that one hitting the top of the list (and I will probably eat those words next week...)

Z8/9 if they are up to the standard Nikon needs would be awesome - with an announcement now they could make the hopefully 2021 olympics... but if they do that, they'd better be sure they can compete with the Canon R5 and Sony A9ii (or anything better those two may throw at it between now and then).

Sony has to bring the new A7 mk4 - the mk3 was amazing when it launched but it has been passed now by the releases from Canon, Nikon and Panasonic. It will be fun though to see how far ahead they can leap this time around - wherever they land will likely be the new standard others will measure themselves against in the $2000+ range (like the Canon R5 right now is the reference in the $3000+ range).

NikonRumors is very quiet right now. Maybe there won't be anything? I rather like Thom's ideas about future DSLRs - the D880 with the D6 AF system, and the surprise D580 with the D6 AF system too. I don't know that I'd get either, but I'm sure they'd be appreciated.

Any Z-mount announcements will be more interesting for me.

I bought a D6 today, promised myself that it is the last camera I will ever buy. But that promise is BS if they toss out a 5xx with D6 focus,
I expect an 850 replacement will be announced at that CES

The D850 replacement is said to be announced early 2021 so makes sense it would be at CES. OTOH, CES isn't the normal show so is there any real reason for Nikon to announce? I suspect we'll get an updated 24-120 f4 E. Why? I just bought a second one a few months back! I doubt that Nikon will put the D6 AF into anything, they just don't do that. Maybe a castrated version like in the D500 (they said it was a D5 af system but it doesn't perform to the same level as the D5).

I am wishing for an annoucement of a Canon APS-C mirrorless wildlife and sports camera, the rumored R7 with the body of the R6 but with an APS-C sensor. This would be the successor of the 7DII and could possibly use the same great sensor of the 90D and M6II but with the benefits of the newer cameras.

I would like to see Nikon release firmware updates to improve the autofocus of their latest mirrorless cameras. Although I see the potential of a D500 with the D6 AF I think Nikon need to show they are investing on developing their mirrorless system.

I am also curious to see what Sigma announces. I wish they would launch medium-sized quality telephoto lenses for mirrorless cameras.

I'd love to see a D850 replacement (D880/D850 II), with two CPUs, although that might increase the price to too close to that of the D6. Having a D500 II with the same upgrade would be good, although I'd like to also see an increase in sensor density, also.

I've read several times of a Z9 release on the mirrorless side, but I'm not going there soon.

As far as lenses are concerned, I've got no guesses, but would love to see a PF version of the 600mm f4 E lens.

However, with any new product announcement, unless Nikon has been able to keep some elephants hidden in a phone booth and started production a while ago, I'll guess that it will be quite a while before any new cameras are available in sufficient quantity to meet initial market demands.

I'm not sure what to expect, if anything, coming out of CES. A real full size DX mirrorless "D500" body would interest me. Most of the DX size mirrorless are so tiny as to feel "toy-like" in my hands. A 200-600 native Z mount (FX) and a pro-summer body like the D500 in DX may make me make the jump.

I would really like to see a D500 equivalent in a Z series and a more complete Z series lens lineup, including the 200-600 and the long primes.

What I really think we are going to see is announcements that are not at all what we expected or want. Like everything in 2020, this event in 2021 will take a direction we didn't see coming.

CES is likely to be kind of dead, many of the big electronics companies aren't even going to show up.

I suspect with all the supply issues camera makers might stay quiet.

Based on content from Youtube influencers, Experts, or what ever you wanna call them (DPreview, Jared Polin, Stephan Wiesner, etc) all agree on the following:
- Nikon will no longer invest in future Z50 upgrades (future is FF mirrorless)
- Nikon might release a cheaper Z30 version without an EVF / I personally doubt it considering the Z5 was just released as entry level..
- Nikon will (hopefully) release a sports / wildlife top of the line Z9 in time for the Olympics (or even 2022)
- DSLRs will get one last upgrade for the D850.. I don't see any upgrade for the D7500 / D500 (they are good enough for the price range)

Sony will get out the A7 iv to stay ahead in the race.. and I have a feeling it will pull the bar one notch higher like the MK iii did 3 years ago.

Canon did a lot in 2020 so they will focus on cheaper lenses in 2021.. and probably solving the heating issues they have been facing..

Sigma might come out with a APS-C camera.. Fujifilm will upgrade the outdated Gh5..

I honestly hope everyone is wrong about the future of APSC.. because many simply cannot afford FF or bigger glass!

Give me an updated D850 with the D6 AF and a frame or two faster than the current D850 and I will buy one. Selling my Z6 today to fund a D6.

Honestly, I think that's what the D850 replacement will look like.

What's interesting is that Nikon has a patent for a hybrid EVF system too. In essence, you flip a switch / lever and go from the optical viewfinder to an EVF. If they used it, you could have Z7ii AF with the EVF and all over the viewfinder. If you needed more performance, switch to the optical viewfinder for D6 AF. I'd buy one instantly.

Me too!

Agreed, hit that magical 10FPS or above and good live view/EVF focusing plus DSLR AF and i will pre-order the day it's announced.... and you get to keep using F mount glass :D

The thing is, it's such an innovative idea that I think it will appeal to a ton of people. Plus, it's great for those who can't decide between mirrorless and a DSLR - why not have both at the same time?

I think one of the main manufacturers will do it eventually, and like all things the other will see the initial reaction and then jump on the wagon. It's smart for Nikon to do it with a F mount first until they get the full lens line-up in Z... people that haven't tried mirrorless will have the opportunity to get accustom to the mirrorless advantages without spending a tone on lenses, enjoy it and then the transition to mirrorless occurs.

I know it is really wistful thinking. What about a Nikon 300 PF 2.8 with inbuilt variable TC with 1.4/1.7/2 settings.Wild life photographers would give theri life for it.
I feel Sony would also be bringing out a PF vesrion .They have nothing much except 200-600(consumer) & 600 (pro) price points which limits ones choice to buy Sony gear. They will be able to increase their A9ii sales if they provide PF lenses

I haven’t ventured into the Nikon Mirrorless world and I have always been a year or two behind the rollout of Nikon DSLR bodies and Lenses of choice. Still enjoying a recent purchase of the D850 very much though, I’m looking towards seeing upgrades if any to the D850 or the D500.
