Converters with z9

I've actually carried both the 800mm PF and 400mm f/4.5 on a solo birding walk/hike of around 5 miles. I carried them both on Black Rapid straps so I eliminated the weight of a camera bag. The 400mm f/4.5 weighs almost nothing and the 800mm PF on a camera body is pretty light duty. I had a 1.4 TC in my pocket.

My thought process was there is a clear difference and no real overlap between the 400mm and the 800mm lenses. I considered the 400mm lens for large wading birds and environmental images and the 800mm PF for small birds and somewhat distant subject.

These two lenses were a lot easier to carry than just the 600mm f/4 by itself with a tripod. I'm not shooting the 600mm f/4 handheld.

Interesting to watch how the highly praised 500pf got replaced with the 400.
The 500PF is still a great lens :) I don't think it's a matter of people perceiving the 500PF as inferior, it's more that the 400 4.5 is giving similar performance and comes with a dedicated Z mount and dedicated Z series controls. That's the big thing, IMO.

That is the the big thing in our house for sure. My wife likes the smaller and lighter form factor and even likes the lens hood better on the 400 4.5 and some day she may take it off her Z50 long enough for me to use it again

Just sold my 500pf… I had my 100-400, and not use my 500 so much… I prefered to sell while the value is good… with all the new lens that Nikon is proposed… but… I also realized that I use my 100-400 mostly at 400mm! So, I really think to buy the 400mm + the TC 1.4. If I need a zoom… I can bring my 70-200 (with the TC), for animal, my 400 + tc (in my pocket!). Seems a lot of flexibility. For shadow birds… I really look to faster lens….

I was using my Z9 with the 100-400mm S lens with the 1.4x tc attached. The attached photo, is uncropped and not processed. Shooting data: Z9, 100-400mm S lens, 1.4x tc, 460mm, f9, 1/500, ISO 2200, +.3EV. I had no issues using the 1.4x tc with this lens on my Z9.

I sold my 500PF as well for the 400/4.5…but a, keeping both the 100-400 and 70-200. The latter for when I need the 2.8 amd the former for flexibility on bird shoots here in FL because the 400 with the TC is a really excellent 500/6.3. The high $$ glass is better…but cost and more importantly weight make them not really in my wheelhouse. And I’m leaving the 400 behind on our upcoming UK trip as it really isn’t primarily a photo trip and with only having space for 3 lenses and 2 bodies (7II and 9)…the 14-30, 24-70, and 100-40p with TCs will provide better overall coverage. And those are mighty nice shots. I love the 400/TC combo…but for a birding hike it’s too limiting in framing and composition…sometimes (well, a lot of the time actually)…400 or 560 is just too much lens…then there’s other times when 800 or 1120 is needed but one can only carry so much and my bride continues to refuse to be my Sherpa.
