DxO PureRAW 5

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Again, it's not me. Check posts #37 and #38.
I can't believe it! Based on the comments--I just tried uploading two HE* files into CP1 (works of coarse) and then Open With DXO PureRaw 4. And it worked! Holey HE* Moley.
Even DXO customer support would not tell me that this would work. And, it appears that the HE* is not and HIF file. Still don't know what that means.
So I am thank you for pushing me to investigate. As well as the others in this thread.

Saw this on Thom Hogan:

.HIF — This is an image file that contains 10-bit HEIF data with an HLG gamma, and is in the BT.2020 Color Space. This corresponds to what the video world call HDR files. If displayed properly, you'll see two+ stops of additional highlight data. If displayed improperly, the image will look drab and a bit underexposed.

I haven’t been monitoring this thread for a while, so please forgive me parachuting in. 😕

HE* and HEIF are completely different image formats. The simple explanation is that HE/HE* are proprietary compressed RAW formats. HEIF records images in a non-RAW compressed format with higher quality than JPEG.

I use DxO Pure RAW and it reads and opens HE/HE* image format images with no problem at all.

Is there a way to switch to HE* (from uncompressed RAW) in the Z8 without having to use a menu?
Making that switch is a menu selection under RAW Recording within the Photo Shooting menu. You could add RAW Recording to My Menu. There isn’t an option to add it to the 𝓲 menu or to a button.

I've purchased PureRaw 2 only to see them release v3 barely a month later - classic marketing tactic they always use. Still, you can't beat their value for money when it comes to NR above 6400. Adobe needs to step up with a faster, more polished NR engine. That said, Adobe's option ranks second best, particularly since the ACR tech preview now includes denoise in its editing features. This gives Adobe a massive advantage over PureRaw since you can repeatedly process compatible image formats without DNG conversion. List of supported formats are here: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/enhance.html#ai-enhancements

I've settled on Adobe for my workflow, even though there are several alternatives on the market. I experimented with Capture One for 2 years, since it handles Nikon RAW files much better than Adobe's questionable demosaicing, but C1 falls short in other areas - the workflow isn't streamlined, they charge premium prices without meaningful updates, no AI denoise and their catalog management lags behind Lightroom's. Plus, maintaining multiple RAW processors just drains your wallet unnecessarily.

I had similar experiences with Skylum's Luminar/Neo and DXO PhotoLab before abandoning them. No software package is flawless, so you need to pick what works best for your situation. Adobe meets most of my pro requirements, though it's not perfect. When I absolutely need Nikon's authentic color rendering, I'll process images in NX Studio first and export as TIFFs. For everything else, Adobe does the job adequately and for the price of 3 coffee / month I have all what I need.

+ If you frequently need that feature, you can assign 'Access top item in My Menu' to a custom button/ i menu. I've tried working with High Efficiency formats myself, but honestly found the drawbacks outweigh the advantages for now, which is why I've gone back to using lossless raw files instead.

Everyone's situation is different. If file size and post-production processing power is a bottleneck, the HE formats are perfectly fine. As for any paid work, I'd highly recommend sticking to the lossless format, have multiple larger size CFE-Type B (or even the new 4.0) cards ready, + a well-optimized editing workstation and you'll be fine.

Check that! Maybe. Apple OS (Sonoma) only supports RAW Lossless not HE*. Everything I use supports HE*. I just need to accept this and not think I need this shortcut for preview.

MacOS doesn’t display thumbnails for HE/HE* images. There are no other Apple-specific limitations besides that.

I haven't tried Adobe denoise since their latest update, I'll have to test this. Because even DxO PureRAW 3 absolutely smoked Adobe denoise (with slightly better results IMO). I'll do some testing tonight, thanks for mentioning this.
Adobe de noise is already much much faster. I saw a huge difference on a laptop that used to take 10 minutes or more, now takes the same time as DxO pure raw 4.

You don't have to pay now, I don't think the price will change between now through the release date (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall DxO ever doing this).

But if you do pre-order v5 now, you instantly get v4 for free to use it in the meantime. Full version or upgrade gets v4, from what I understand.
The link says it won't be realeased until April 15. Do they really expect us to pay now for software and wait a month and a half to use it?

I have been using PL since version 3, currently on PL8

I am however still unclear as to the differential in target markets between the two programs???
Just saw this....PL8 basically includes PR4. There is no need to have both. PL8 is a 'full fledged' PE application. I'm sure there will be an update to PL something after PR5 is released as the PR5 technology will have additive differences--according to DXO.

Yes, your summary IMO is correct in that the released 'features' between the two sort of leapfrog each other in their next paid releases. It is a pity that what promoted as significant changes are only ever 'attached' to major releases rather than free dot updates.

It could be argued that PL is their flagship program compared to PR i.e. why is it that PL is behind in its development cycle?

In regard to 'target market sector' the cynic in me infers that DxO see PR as a bigger market than PL hence the primary development on it.

PS by way of compassion, Affinity Photo gets some significant updated functionality within dot releases.

As I understand it from people who received the notification by email, DeepPRIME 3 is a free upgrade for PhotoLab owners. As always, their site is very obscure and not very informative, so I couldn't find that reference online. Perhaps it's buried somewhere in an FAQ. I saw this quote several times in different forums, so I suppose it's legit.

The other updates are specific to PureRAW, so I don't think both products need simultaneous updates. It's usually safer from a development and support point of view to stagger product updates.

DeepPRIME 3 has been trained on a dataset ten times larger than its predecessor and leverages our exclusive database of over 100,000 DxO Modules, ensuring an unprecedented level of image quality. Additionally, we are unveiling a technology preview of DeepPRIME XD3 X-Trans (beta), bringing our most advanced noise reduction technology to X-Trans sensors for the first time.

Both innovations will be available in the upcoming DxO PureRAW 5 and will soon be integrated into DxO PhotoLab as a free upgrade

EDIT: You can see confirmation of the above in this press release: https://forum.dxo.com/uploads/short-url/e9ayqcHzcsbEby7Bt1Mgh7EDbJG.pdf: "Both DeepPRIME 3 and DeepPRIME XD3 X-Trans (beta) will be available as part of version 5 of DxO’s unique RAW preprocessing software PureRAW and will also be available in the coming weeks in DxO PhotoLab, the industry-leading full RAW editing solution, as a free upgrade."

That probably means Photolab 9, which will be paid, not a free upgrade to Photolab 8. I have no problem paying a few dollars for upgrades, we already have many $ sunk into gear, cheaping out on software is not the way to go.

Thank you for the update and link to the press release. Sounds very positive.

I just hope that as they mention AI being more greatly involved that that will be 'local' and not requiring "Cloud" involvement?

That probably means Photolab 9, not a free upgrade to Photolab 8.
Hmmm? they do tend to introduce such feature improvements on version updates.

However, the Press Release is dated February and said/stated the inclusion on PL would happen in weeks, whereas v9 is likely, if it follows the schedule seen before, to be released in September onwards.......and that is many months not weeks away;)

I hope it is free, I am a PL8 user.
