For Nikon 500mm PF Lens: Really Right Stuff LCF-11 Replacement Foot vs. Kirk LP-64 Replacement Lens Foot

LOL, was thinking the same thing. While i have the RRS foot for the 500PF, design does not bother me, same as their 70-200 and 300PF feet, but honestly, this lens is so light, I've never had it on a tripod. That is reserved for big glass. I do like that RRS started putting QD fittings on all there stuff a couple years back.
You only use a tripod because of weight? I am a fairly big man and I use a tripod sometimes. 🤷‍♂️

In the 2.5 years that I have been using the 500mm PF lens I have never had a problem with the foot coming loose. But then I always tighten the locking screw on the foot. Try tightening the screw as much as possible and see if the foot comes off when pressing the release button. Unless I am doing autofocus fine tuning with a new camera body or using a TC-14 with the lens the foot is not attached and I am hand holding the camera (this also to 70-200mm and 80-400mm lenses).

I did attach a Wimberly P-40 plate to the bottom of the Nikon foot and this allows me to have the foot further forward when the lens is clamped in a gimbal head and better able to balance the weight of the light lens with a heavy camera.

I agree. Even the the cheap iShoot has a locking knob. When tightened up, you can push the button and nothing happens.

Everyone already knows it won't fall off when it is tight.

I have the RRS foot. like some one mentioned, it has a sturdy knob that has to be loosened to release the foot completely. accidentally pressing the foot lever, while the knob is tight does not release the foot. I have carried the foot in my hand during hikes- no issues. May i also suggest, holdfast moneymaker or equivalent strap- excellent weight distribution while hiking with a 50L backpack, a d850 with grip plus 500pf on one side, fuji gfx 100s with 32-64mm on the other side ; clocked in 20 miles in moderate to strenuous hike in the tetons- no issues. backpack weight about 40# with supplies, tripod etc.

I bought the Hejnar per @Steve recommendation and it is very well made, longer and feels and fits grat in the palm of my hand. Unlike others I use the tripod foot to rest in the palm of my hand when shooting and it keeps my hand fingers away from the manual focus ring and fits my target rifle long lens holding technique ... although that is more important with the 600 f/4 E or even the Tamron 150-600 G2.

I'm getting closer to buying the Nikon 500mm PF lens. However, after watching Steve's review video and hearing the concerns others have had with the Nikon lens' foot coming loose and releasing the camera while you're out & about, I think that I definitely need to add to my budget a replacement foot.

I read some reviews on BH that the Really Right Stuff (RRS) foot has a similar concern with its release button being in a position where you might accidentally press it and BOOM!, there goes you camera and lens crashing to the ground!

Considering these design issues, which of these replacement feet is the better one, ergonomically, and for the safety of the lens/camera?

Thanks for your input.
I got the Wimberley and have been pleased thus far.
I'm also using the Wimberly foot and it works perfectly.

I got one of the first 500 PF lenses, and have taken thousands of bird photos with it. Took the foot off day one and don’t even know where it is now. The lens was literally made for handholding. Save same money and don’t buy a replacement for a while to see if you really need it.
