What species is this? Rufous? Fantastic image! In East Tennessee, Ruby-throated hummingbirds are what we expect to see, but this Male Rufous HB is back for his fourth winter with us. He shows up in August and heads northwest in early April.

Thanks, eph7! How fortunate that you have the little jewelled birds around through the winter. Around here (CO) they're gone by mid-September, to return in late June. What species is this? Rufous? Fantastic image!
Thanks. In Clinton, TN, just a little northwest of Knoxville.Love this hummingbird! great shot Where was this taken?
Thanks DR!Here is one of the pretty Rufous-tailed Hummingbirds from Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. I had never tried to photograph Hummingbirds until my trip with Steve and Rose in 2018, so any time I actually got the bird in the frame and reasonable sharp was a bonus! They are a challenge. This was taken with a D850 + 500mm PF, 1/1600, f5.6 and 6400 ISO, because it was handheld.View attachment 1068
Thanks very much DR.That's a beauty Marion, the curve of the body and wing sweep as it comes in to feed is awesome.
Very nice Phil, just wondering if this is handheld and if you usually use 1.4tc with the 500pf. I’ve played with the 500pf and 1.4tc but wasn’t really happy, only played never really gave it a true test. I’m a very poor hand holder at longer focal lengths. Thanks Dave. Next time you visit, make a point to stop by the Henderson "Bird Viewing Preserve". You won't be disappointed. Wifey & encountered several dozen "lifers" in just 2 days there. It was excellent.
Another sample.
