Ideal resolution for Nikon FX and DX cameras

I'm happy with the Z9, heck I don't need any more my PC is choking already and it's a pretty new Alienware! 😆
I am quite pleased with the Z 9 and personally I don't see any advantage to up to a higher resolution camera. If a DX camera came out, I would like to see 30-33 MP but that may make the sensor spacing rather small and decrease the high ISO abilities. Then again the engineers at Nikon are magicians. :)

Many of us would like Nikon to add a pixel shift Hi-Res options the Z9 (and obviously other cameras that use the same tech). However, this is best implemented using between 5 and 16-shots which are stitched together in camera. But this is really on useful for still life and landscapes.

Only Sony has delivered a FF/FX body with a sensor resolution above 50mp - Canon's R5 is 45mp and recently released R6ii has 20.1mp. It is unclear if Canon will deliver a much higher res body. The R7 is the odd one in the Canon lineup - it has a far higher pixel density than other Canon bodies and is an APS-C - more on this one below.

It is entirely reasonable to assume that a Z8 with a 45.7mp sensor will be delivered next year, BUT in my view only after the Z6iii (24-30mp) and Z7iii (61-63mp) have been delivered. I believe that Nikon probably has to deliver one higher res-full frame but small body (my guess the Z7iii) and a greatly improved Z6ii (to compete with the R6ii). How the Z9 tech flows down into these gripless and smaller bodies and what this means in terms of spec -- we will have to wait to see.

Will Nikon deliver a DX mirrorless body with much higher resolution than 21mp (same as the D500 and Z50/Z30)? Well it is really unclear what the size of market is for such a body AND there certainly is a lot of competition -- Canon R7, OM Systems and Fujifilm all having APS-C or smaller sensors with very high pixel density. A DX sized 30-40 MP stacked BSI sensor is entirely feasible and as noted in the hands of consumers from other brands.
If Nikon launch a DX PRO body, the much vaunted D500 replacement, with "only" another 21mp sensor then this would significantly disappoint the BIF market -- who are the target buys of such a Pro body. The challenge for these shooters is they want a Pro-Body (no-grip), awesome low light, high FPS and clean high res images added to the 1.5DX crop factor. A resolution of say 32mp would have the same pixel density as a 63MP FX sensor in what some seem to want in a high-res FF Nikon body. AND is entirely deliverable -- BUT with so many DX, APS-C and M43 bodies available at this level from other brands would not Nikon just be competing for a small/specialist market and one wonders about a D500 replacement viability. I simply do not see the business case for it.

At this point in time if Nikon delivers a 30-33mpx DX crop camera people will be complaining about noise. I don't see that happening but I think I've been wrong once or twice! 🤣
