I love Kestrels. Tiny, cool, and ferocious. Two winters ago there was a certain male kestrel that frequented the same field to hunt voles and song birds. It snowed a lot that winter and he got so used to me that he really didn't care that I'd stop my truck and take his picture out the window for several minutes at a time. It seemed like he habituated to my particular vehicle. If anyone else ever stopped he would fly off only to return after they were gone. I have a lot of photos of him but here are 3 of my favorites.

I'm not sure if this is my favourite bird. However, as a very you child i saw pictures of this bird and always dreamed of seeing one. This dream was fulfilled 40 years later, when a trip to Uganda allowed me to find this amazing bird.

Nikon D700, Sigma 120-300 f2.8 + 1.4, F6.3 @ 1/640, ISO1000

DR, now you've done it! What a super shot of a wonderful bird. In my five trips to the Arctic I never came across the Snowy Owl, how I would love to. Trip no. 6 being prepared!!!

Lovely shot Hut, I love our swallows too and eagerly anticipate their return each year. Sadly the numbers returning this year were very few.

Thanks! It took some travel North for the first few times I photographed Snowy's and then one year while living in Seattle one just decided to spend the winter just a few blocks from where I was living and I first saw it while out on a dog walk :) So you never know....
 
For you Sandhill Crane lovers, we have clear skies today just outside the Columbia NWR. At this moment there hundreds of Cranes circling high above our place enjoying the fresh air. :cool:(y)

Thanks, everyone, for your comments on my sandhill crane shot. This shot was taken just before evening light left the scene and we had almost packed up to leave but I said, "no, let's stay until the sun is gone" and this is one of the series of shots that were the last shots before the sun went down. One moment of beautiful evening light as the cranes took off for their overnight rest elsewhere.

I have a few favorites but really like that these guys are living in my neighborhood in Milwaukee County. When I was young, there were none in the state, now they wander through our yard on a regular basis.
