Macbook Pro (Sequoia 15.3.1) Slow with Extrernal SSDs

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Question - I reformatted the G-DRIVE PRO as APFS, and performance is much improved. Thank you all! Unfortunately, I'm unable to process photos in DxO from LRC. It's not the plug-in and I know the files I'm trying to import were NOT previously run through DxO so not sure what to do. Any thoughts on what I did wrong and how I could get around this? Thank you!

That’s not a RAW file. DXO only processes RAW files.

I have three SATA G-Raid TB 3 external HDDs that are daisy-chained to my Mac. Each has two removable HDDs. One of them is 24 TB (2 X 12 TB), and two are 12 TB (2 X 6 TB.) Two are formatted to APFS and one to Mac OS Extended. Does daisy chaining them likely create a significant slowdown? Do I need to reformat the Mac OS Extended formatted drive to APFS to match the other two since none of them are SSDs? Does formatting a non-SSD drive to APFS create any issues?

I think daisy chaining non Thunderbolt drives probably does slow things. We all used to use non-SSD, spinning drives. I have an old one I previously used that I reformatted to AFPS. It will help as this is what drives the Mac OS these days. Just make sure your backup is fine before you reformat.

FWIW (and I know I'm a bit late to the conversation), my Samsung T7 drives were both sluggish, so I reformatted the worst of the two to APFS (from EX FAT). It immediately became the faster of the two, so I reformatted the other one to APFS and both are running at expected speeds now. As @Ralph says, it makes a difference.
Hi @Steve! Thanks so much for responding! I too am finding the reformatted drives as APFS are much speedier now. What I don't understand is that I'm unable to get DxO to recognize the A1 .ARW files that were copied from my back up. I've never had any issues with DxO processing .ARW files. Were you able to process any of yours that you restored to the APFS format? Thanks!

Do you have a thumb drive (or any other drive) you can format in exFAT? If so, I wonder if DxO software would be able to open the file.

Hi @JAJohnson! I was able to get DxO to open a file saved on my local HD. This same file will NOT open in DxO from my G-DRIVE PRO. Unfortunately, the majority of my photos are NOT stored on my local HD and were primarily stored on the G-DRIVE PRO (originally Journaled and now APFS). Perhaps this is a permissions issue but so far everything looks correct. I'm sure I'm going to feel very foolish once this is figured out. Thank you again!

Sorry, local HD is APFS.

If you can open the ARW file with other software that would seem to eliminate a permissions issue, but who knows? Has DxO customer support been able to help?

The ARW is just an extension of the filename. Behind the scenes there is a database that tracks the file type which is what applications use to determine how (and whether) to open a file. Sounds like that database of associations has been messed up for the Sony raw files. You could try this (answer courtesy of LeChat, the new French AI app):

Changing file type associations in macOS allows you to open specific file types with your preferred applications. Here’s how you can do it:

### Method 1: Using Finder
1. **Locate the File**: Find the file whose association you want to change in Finder.
2. **Get Info**: Right-click (or Control-click) on the file and select "Get Info" from the context menu. You can also select the file and press `Command + I`.
3. **Change Open With**: In the "Get Info" window, look for the "Open with:" section. Click the dropdown menu and select the application you want to use to open this file type.
4. **Change All**: If you want all files of this type to open with the selected application, click the "Change All..." button and confirm the change.

### Method 2: Using the "Open With" Menu
1. **Locate the File**: Find the file in Finder.
2. **Open With**: Right-click (or Control-click) on the file and hover over the "Open With" option in the context menu.
3. **Choose Application**: Select the application you want to use from the list. If the application is not listed, choose "Other..." and navigate to the application you want to use.
4. **Always Open With**: If you want to make this change permanent for all files of this type, check the "Always Open With" box before opening the file.

### Method 3: Using Default Apps (Third-Party Application)
For more advanced control over file associations, you can use a third-party application like "Default Apps" or "RCDefaultApp". These applications provide a more comprehensive interface for managing file type associations.

1. **Download and Install**: Download and install the third-party application from a trusted source.
2. **Configure Associations**: Open the application and configure the file type associations according to your preferences.

### Method 4: Using Terminal (Advanced)
For advanced users, you can change file type associations using the Terminal. This method involves editing system files and should be done with caution.

1. **Open Terminal**: You can find Terminal in Applications > Utilities or by searching for it using Spotlight.
2. **Edit LaunchServices**: Use the `lsregister` command to change file associations. For example:
```sh
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -u URL -r -f -domain local -domain system -domain user
```
This command will unregister and re-register the LaunchServices database, which can sometimes resolve issues with file associations.

By following these methods, you can easily change file type associations in macOS to suit your workflow and preferences.

There is something Really Wrong with with the last Mac Updates. My T7 ejects with no provocation and sometimes runs slow.

Not switching from ExFAT as I also run a Win7 Toughbook C31.

Hi @Ralph and @JP Onstwedder! Thank you for your replies! I did re-install DxO previously so I was good there. Also, I did move some .ARW files from the G-DRIVE PRO to my internal HD and was able to launch DxO from within LRC so I knew the files weren't corrupted.

Interestingly, when I followed @JP Onstwedder's steps to force an Open With from Finder, now DxO works from LRC on files that were restored from the backup. I've only tested it on a few files so far but it's looking good.

Sadly, I don't think I'm out of the woods though. I just imported some files from this morning from my interal HD to the G-DRIVE PRO and it threw "corrupted file" errors on some of the files. This is nerve-wracking for sure!

@Mal Paso, I am sorry to hear that you're also running into some issues with the latest Mac updates! I hope these issues resolve soon so we're both running smoothly again.

Well ... I ran some files from my G-DRIVE PRO through DxO and have to say that the performance was not stellar. I guess I should be happy that it at least functions, but boy it was very slow. Took about 8 minutes instead of 1 minute (or seconds).

😢 I hope you get this problem resolved soon.

Did you notice anything unusual during the update? I’ve not had any problems at all. My T7s work just as well as they did before the update.

No, everything went as usual. I have had issues selecting things with the mouse after the last update. It started with not being able to select emails, a reboot fixed that. Today I couldn't select files, when it did work, my T7 ejected immediately. I think the last update is buggy. Apple M1 Pro with 16GB ram and 1TB SSD. Sequoia 15.3.1

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the importance of a good data cable. The capabilities of USB C cables can be confusing and I have had some cables not work at all with my external ssd's and others limit the speed. I try to use a quality brand with at least 10Gbps rating. Thunderbolt cables work great with Macs.
USB 3.1 Gen2: 10Gbps(1.25GB/s)

ThunderBolt 3.0: 40 Gbps(5GB/s)

ThunderBolt 4.0: 40 Gbps(5GB/s)

I agree. Usually when external drives disconnect unexpectedly, there is a connection issue. Could be the cable. I might add that I’m running the latest update with no issues on my M4 Mac Mini.

I am not a DXO user but AI suggests renaming the database. Just make sure you screenshot it first so you remember in case you want to put it back.
Seems like something simple to try. Maybe start a new thread with the title DXO help or search their own forum if they have one.

Fyi, this morning I had to do the same thing. Use @JP Onstwedder suggestion to force the "Open With" from Finder first. Then DxO would recognize the .ARW files from LRC and DxO directly. And even after another reboot, 38 files took ~8 minutes to process on my Macbook Pro M3 Max with 36 GB of memory and plenty of interal HD space running Sequoia 15.3.1. Have to say my ancient HP running Win 10 performs better than this now. I guess I'll try another uninstall/re-install of DxO, but not sure I want to rename the LR Catalog just yet. Still waiting to hear back from DxO.
