Nikkor 600mm f/4 or Nikkor 500mm F/5.6 PF

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

There's a lot of good recommendations in this thread…but it really comes down to how much you're willing to spend. Given spending somebody else's money…the 600 f4 is clearly the winner…but then there's that whole $12,000 price tag. If we ever get over the CoViD and can start doing things again…I think I'll rent the 500PF and see it it provides significantly better IQ and weight/size benefits over the Tamron G2 I am currently using. I could afford the 500PF…and while I could also easily afford the 600 f4 spending that much just doesn't make sense to me…although if somebody wants to give me one to test for 10 years or so I could get talked into that:)

Im going to do this incrementally. I’m starting with the 500 PF. Now, if I can only find a 500 PF. Seems to be out of stock everywhere. After all I’ve read, I’m convinced Steve is right that the 500PF and the 600 f/4 serve very different purposes and so that will be next on the list. My concern with the 600mm f/4, besides price, is it’s a monster and at 70 I’m not sure how much humping around I can do with it. I suspect my next trip to Yellowstone is where I’ll make that decision. Thanks for all the advice from everyone, it’s been very helpful.

Try ProCam.com I buy from the Livonia store and they do ship (you'll need to call - I don't think they have that lens listed on their site). Most of the time if they don't have one, they'll get one pretty fast - way quicker than the big stores. Roberts camera is another good source.

I got mine at Yellowstone Camera in West Yelllowstone (406) 646-5191‬ they do not always have one in stock but they frequently get them in quickly. Same price and they ship for free inside the US. They also have a store in Idaho Falls, ID called Perfect Light Camera. If you heading to Yellowstone they also have a wealth of information on where what is, offer one on one or one on two jeep tours into the park with a photography instructor. I picked up my 500PF 6-22-20 and with a map they provided and instructions on where to look for what I wanted I headed into the park at 3:30 PM .... by 9 PM I had photographed all of what I had asked them about Harlequin Ducks in flight, Wolves ... close not little dots in a scope, Elk in velvet and with a bonus Grizzly and cub and Black Bear. The D850 and 500 PF combo shot this shot at 9:05 PM

The 600 is a great lens when placed on a sturdy tripod and gimbal head. You should be able to find a good one on the used market, unless you want the latest and greatest version, for a substantial savings. Make sure you save enough money for that sturdy tripod and head which will cost another 1000+. You will not be disappointed with the images.

First of all, bcause it is a f5.6 lens, it technically becomes a f8 fi you combine it with a TC14 and as a consequence you loose the majority of the AF sensors and AF speed. The exact number depends on the camera model, but the problem is the same including the top pro bodies. So I would say forget about the TC with the 500PF unless you make long distance shoots of dead animals :giggle:...., well slow moving objects should be o.k. Apart from that the effect of TC's on IQ varies depending on the lens/TC combination, but there is somebody who wrote some interesting stuff about it that is probably worthwhile to take a look at.

One is a general article around TC's including giving a kind of guideline for estimating IQ drop by TCs (exemplary test done with a 70-200 FL VR), the other one looking at the differences between TC-14E II and III. Would be interesting to compare this with experiences made by the people here.

Well, before anybody starts to shout "forget lab tests, go out and try": I know that there is always a difference between lab and real world but I think that as always the truth is somewhere in the middle. This is why I like the things @Steve is doing in his reviewsso much, where he does a decent real world fied test combined with tests that are more "lab-like" just to make it easier to see the effects he is talking about. One good example related to TC is his 500PF review. There he compares the 500PF and the 300PF + TC14 showing that beside a TC being able to decrease resolution it also can add CA with lenses that normally has a problem with that (in this case the 300PF).

In this context I would love to know if somebody out there has experience with comparing the 70-200 FL VR + TC14 with the 300PF.
We don't have a 300pf but do keep a 70-200 FL loaded with a 1.4 tel. It is an amazing combination. Focus is so fast you can't believe it.

Paul, not sure if you would buy used, but there are a couple of mint condition 500pf's on the market now. They used to fly out the door, now like all nikon equipment, not so much. There are also several 600e fl lenses for sale and they aren't moving either. Unfortunately this is a sign that nikon is falling behind the competition, so some guys/gals are jumping ship. I'm hanging in there, but nikon needs to play catch up, and fast...

Thanks. I’m looking at all the possibilities and have no hesitation to buy used if I trust the vendor and the gear is in really good condition. Some folks on this thread have made some great suggestions which I’ll be following up on. Thanks again.

Where are you seeing mint used PFs? All the ones I've seen are going for more than retail.

Thanks Steve!
I followed Steve’s advice back in February. He suggested that I order one from a local dealer. That’s what I did. It took a few months but I got it. It was worth the wait.

That could be one of the problems they are really hard to find. I was really lucky with my 300 PF because someone traded his entire equipment set due to change of the system platform. After I decided to keep mine thy only thing I can do is wish you luck

I saw one mint one for $3400 and another is for sale for $3500. Both mint, and I don't think the first one sold, he just pulled the listing for a while. No big bargains, but at least they are below msrp. No new stock anywhere that I know of.

Mine came right from China after ordering. If you are looking at B&H or Adorama there is probably a large order cue. I was on there notification list for over a year and they never had any in stock.
That’s when I decided to go through my local dealer. I ordered it in late February right after the pandemic hit. Things were shut down for a while but after things opened up I was told in late May that I would receive it in a month. I picked it up at my local dealer on June 27.
What was nice about It was that these small authorized dealers have Nikon reps that can give them updates on the orders.
This particular store told me that they have had very good success getting the 500pf.

If you want a new one I would tend to agree. I randomly got mine from a small dealer after a buddy of mine mentioned that they had just gotten two in, one of which was not spoken for. That one ended up being mine. I was just responding to those who would be willing to buy a mint used one.

For the 500PF I was really lucky. I called a few dealers and there was one about 100km away who had it new in the shelf and for less than big A..., so I just had to jump in the car, drive there and get it. This was after @Steve wrote that it might be the best and fastest way to get it. Really funny considering that all the time it is said classic shops are going down because online shops are faster and cheaper :)

I put myself on the list for BH while trying to decide between the PF and a used F4 telephoto. Thanks for the tip, I'll check some local shops.

Local shops or even small not so local shops that will ship are both very good bets.

But FWIW, I was on the B&H waiting list for about 3 months last year and then I pulled the plug. I was about the get back on the waiting list this spring and decided to look around. Adorama had it in stock and sent it out with 2 day shipping. Sometimes it pays to check more than one of the big shops.

Thanks Steve for your recommendation. Called Procam today and they just happened to receive two 500PFs today. I bought one. Thanks again.

That's awesome :) They really are one of the best to buy from.
@PAUL50, @Steve I just saw the below on their site. Are they not taking returns if you open the box or just if you buy an open box discounted item? What if the lens is a bad copy? Are they good about accepting those returns? I tried calling, but they aren't answering at the moment. Do you know if they charge Tax for out of state? It didn't look like it so far in the checkout.

Please note: Due to COVID-19 we are unable to accept any used or open box item returns.
