Nikon 800mm PF

You hit the nail on the head! I guarantee a 200-600mm lens would bring in exponentially more revenue than a $14K lens that only a few will buy.
That may be true but that new 400mm lens is so well received it will take 6 months at least to get one, it's a huge seller so far.

Those who really need the 400 f/2.8 will not. Settle for anything else so the cost is what it is. The rest of us can live with lesser options.

Sony play book: Released the 400GM and 100-400 at the same time. Year later they dropped the 600GM and 200-600. I suspect something similar from Nikon. They dropped their 100-400 and now 400. I suspect the 600 and 200-600 officially announced later this year and preorders either Dec or very first of 2023.

I thought I would have no trouble finding that lens but I was wrong. I thought several members on here got theirs.

it seems like there was a shipment back in 2021, then no additional ones. similar with the 24-100 (which i also have one on order).

i ordered the 100-400 through my local store back in oct, but i didn't put in an nps expedite until january. it is unclear how soon i would get mine without the nps expedite. perhaps it didn't make a difference, maybe it did.

From the reviews I’ve read it’s a really good lens even with both TC’s

This guy knows the price of the new 800mm PF !

are they throwing in the towel on competition and trying to be an exotic?
They're in a different game right now, survival. And looking at their year end numbers, they're actually doing better and executing on their stated strategy. They're far far behind Canon, Sony to a lesser degree. With finite resources they appear focused on profitability which to me makes sense. Now that the DSLR is officially dead, they need to build out amateur and pro-am camera lines, round out the f4 lenses, etc. By most appearances the 500pf and the new 400 + tc, possibly the 100-400 are home-runs and so they have the luxury where to put their resources which seem to be (on the long end) sports shooters who still prefer fast primes.

I’m no marketing expert but it seems like they would have sold a shitload of 200-600 lenses by now if they had put it at the front of the line???
I agree 100%... Nikon has to know that this will be a "super-seller" for those wanting a super-telephoto for less option. I am still surprised that they introduced the relatively expensive 100-400S prior to the 200-600mm lens. If one considered that the 70-200 w/ converters was already available, designed, and manufactured, the 200-600 would be a non-competitive lens in their line.
So why hasn't there been a 200-600mm lens yet?... I suspect that Nikon wants to compete directly with the Sony lens. However, Sony has used some kind of manufacturing and design pixie-dust to produce an internal zoom 200-600 for $2000. The only Nikon lenses with this technology in large glass are the 200-400, 180-400, and 120-300mm optics. These are premium lenses and expensive to design and manufacture.
Nikon is now faced with disappointing their wildlife hobbyists by producing a "lesser" quality lens for much less (like the Canon RF 100-400), or producing a better lens that will likely push the $3000 price structure...

‘You might be right but I think Nikon has a lot of room to play in between the Sony 200-600 which is indeed the value champion, and the canon 100-500 which is… much less so (And canon can’t keep them in stock). The canon is $2900, limited to 500mm, non internal, f:7.1 and can’t take a converter unless extended beyond 300mm so I’m pretty sure Nikon can beat that lens.
‘Their bigger issue might be that such a zoom could make the 500pf obsolete. Depending on their plans for the 500pf and its production line, that may or may not be a problem.
