I posted some links here on strategic implications of the Z Mount, and Nikon engineers keep emphasized this in interviews etc and their mainstream marketing. This video by Nikon engineer illustrates the fundamental features, including why it's impossible to adapt Z mount lenses to any of the current camera systems without an intrinsic penalties, as @Steve explains above. The sketch below shows a comparison from this thread.

Older comparison of Mount designs

Adding to what @Steve said. Nikon has the shortest flange distance on the Z mount so in theory, you could use an adapter to use other manufacture lenses on the Z but not the other way around.

The illustration also shows how thin an adapter needs to be to use Sony of Canon EF-M lenses on Z-mount. There is just not much space to work with.

The good news longer term is it means third party lens makers can build high quality optics with similar construction and different mounts. The Sony mount is narrower, so it will impact options for designs to maximize optical performance at frame edges especially for wide lenses. That won't prevent high quality lenses, but it does provide some limitation on design options.
