I don't own the 400 f4.5 but I had an extensive use of one for a couple of weeks when it was first on sale last year. I tried it with the 2x TC and the results are quite good depending on good light, but I wouldn't put it above the 500 pf + 1.4x TCIII which I think is an amazing combo, considering.
Thanks for your feedback here Lance as well as great images from both 400mm f/4.5 + Nikon Z TC-2x and 500mm f/5.6 PF + TC14E III. I have been going back and forth between replacing my 500 PF + TC14E III with a 400mm f/4.5 + TC-1.4x and TC-2x. Your images and comment has convinced me to keep the 500 PF and the TC14E III for now. That and the fact that the resale value of the 500mm PF is not going to be very high for a marginal gain / high cost to move to a 600mm f/6.3 PF. In future, I may augment the 500mm PF with an 800mm PF but I do not really see myself going back to the heavy long lenses again (I had a 600mm f/4E FL VR).

I still have my 500 PF and won't be selling it for the 400 f4.5. I am considering the 600 PF but at this stage it is not a priority.
