Nikon Z9 and Z lens care and cleaning

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

For anyone interested, here is a link to the Material Safety Data Sheet for the foam cleaner used in the Nikon Europe video. The container label looks a little different, but I think it is the same product.

Give some attention to Section 3 that lists the chemical composition of the product. If there is a chemist onboard here, perhaps we could hear an experienced opinion regarding the use of propane and butane (among other substances) being applied directly to lens coatings, polycarbonate surfaces, and synthetic rubber handgrips on camera bodies and lenses.

I also noticed the absence of eye protection on the presenter while using the aerosols. Aliphatic hydrocarbons — in a propellant spray — near unprotected eyes? Oh my…

Has anyone seen this video from Nikon Europe on care and cleaning camera and lens? I have always heard this is totally wrong and may void warranty. Would like some other thoughts on this video. What would Nikon USA have to say?
See link below.

Thanks
Mark
You can see clearly Propellant is coming out of the air spray can, a NO NO
Foam is applied, rubbed with the brush, then let to re dry ?
He cleaned the sensor first then the camera body a NO NO.
Intended to be a Helpful video but with some flaws.......

If i need desperately to clean my own sensor while away i use an approved paddle and senor fluid.

For general cleaning Using chemical products may pose a risk. I use only a damp cloth that works perfectly fine.

I usually clean the outside of the body all over first with a dry cloth and never rub, then a dry soft small paint brush for the corners or crevices.

Then i gently wipe the gear all over with a thin soft damp cloth to remove any salt, dirt marks oil or crease like sun cream, i mean damp not wet, preferably a thin Chux cloth or micro fiber that cleans grease or oil, the Chux is thin enough to have the brush wrapped in it for corners or hard to get to places.

Then i allow the camera gear to sit and completely air dry for a few hours before placing it on a wire shelf where it gets constant air flow, i never store my gear in a bag.

For salt air exposure i always have my gear covered with an Aquatec system, and even then i wipe the gear down with a soft thin damp cloth.

Lens cleaning i use a manual puffer first then only when needed approved camera lens cleaning fluid and lens tissue or soft cloth.

Sensors, i used to always clean them my self but given Nikon is so close and i can sit in the cafe down stairs have a tea etc, I happily wait 45 minutes for a sensor clean i leave it to them now. On other occasions I usually take in 3 or 4 cameras at a time and also have them do any updates etc while there, i usually duck across to the shops or Cinema and catch a movie LOL..

Nikon is small here in Sydney but offers excellent fast service and support............

Only an opinion

This Nikon Europe guy is an idiot.
Compressed air can destroy a shutter.
Even microfibre cloths can scrape off a lens coating.
The only point I agree with is keeping your bag clean..🦘

Just an FYI. Here is the response I go from Nikon USA NPS when I sent a link to them of this you tube video.

"That is for Nikon France, who's products are made differently than Nikon USA, we do not reccommend doing such things. Did you need gear cleaned? If so, what gear? If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reply to this email. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9am-8pm EST."

Thank you for your Patience,
