I am enjoying the wonderful images from this group. With the amazing technology we now have it is a great time to be a wildlife photographer. Here are my best from 2024:

Great images curious where you are from I am guessing coastal since I am in Idaho and we do not get Oyster Catchers here and that is cool tandem shot :)

Rick, how do you like the 800f6.3? I’ve been going back and forth on whether I should purchase it. 99% of what I photograph are birds. That oystercatcher shot is really spectacular.
Ralph. I love the 800 6.3. I considered selling it after I got the 600 but there are times where the 800 is a better choice for me. For example in a boat or in a vehicle I can handhold the 800 with ease......it is soooo light and balances well with a Z9. Not to mention while in a boat (where I got the Oystercatcher shot) if it goes overboard I will not feel as bad as if it was the 600

And in a vehicle (moving blind) it is easy to store it in my lap or in the console between the two front seats......ready to fire. Of course low light action is challenging with the 800 but I have handheld stills down to 1/60 shutter speed which is amazing for 800 mm handheld. Also the 1.4 TC can be used if the air is not dirty but most of the time I just "toggle" to DX if I know I will crop. The eagle/chicks shot was with the 1.4 TC and in DX mode I think yet still was a pretty deep crop.

Thanks again for taking time to comment.

Thanks Ken. I am in Southern Virginia. I have a son in Florida so I visit there often. Sometimes it is better to be "lucky" than good as in with the Oystercatcher tandem shot which was shot in the Gulf while in a boat fishing for Bull Reds with my son and our guide. I appreciate your comment.

I agree got the Z800 f/6.3 on 5-1-22 I used it on a day in Yellowstone in snow, wind and also hand held down to 1/60 and was very happy with the results and that was the reason I sold off the rest of my DSLR stuff by the end of June.

I did sell my Z800 f/6.3 when I got the Z600 f/4 TC my dream birding ID photography lens. I do not shoot from a boat and if I want lighter for some reason I will use my Z600 f/6.3 or Tamron z mount 150-500 when I want variable focal length for some reason.

Again this was an amazing series of images thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the detailed response. They are the situations that I usually shoot in. Very often in my car or along the shoreline where the subject is far off. I think you pushed me in the direction to buy but still new to the z8 so it will probably be sometime before I actually bite the bullet to purchase.

The 800 will give you some nice images Ralph. I am not sure how it balances on the Z8 though without a grip. And I have seen some nice deals on used 800's over the last few months.
