Sunday with Nikon's forgotten camera (D6) :)

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

The photo of the kestrel is a dandy. I've taken to using inexpensive screw-in aluminum lens hoods, they're light, don't break and I've never had one come off -- the only filters I ever use are CPL and ND for waterfall/landscape so the hoods never come off my long lenses.
Thanks. And yes I'm considering my options for a new hood; likely going to bite the bullet and go with the Zemlin; the 500 hood is (was) the only hood I had any real trouble with so I'm hesitant to simply replace it with the Nikon hood.

Couple very nice photos.
The Z9 have a serious concern?
Thanks Charles. The LCD monitor stopped automatically turning on when pulled from the camera. Nikon's had it for over a week now and has been silent since an initial conversation so I'm guessing they don't know what's what, yet. Going to check in tomorrow; maybe (hopefully not!) waiting for a part :)

Nice shots Steven. You should take a long look at the Zemlin hoods. A lot less money and better designed. Different lengths available too. I have them on a couple of my long lenses.
Thanks Rick. I've got a Zemlin cap for my 180-400 and love the quality; will almost certainly go for the hood replacement from them, tho for that particular hood Zemlin is about the price (in Cdn dollars) than the Nikon replacement. But factoring not losing a second hood... :)

Excellent pictures. That dark eyed junco is a cutie. I can never get one on a tree branch. Ours always stay on the ground where my wife puts down the seeds.

I just recently got the 300mm PF and the TC-14E III. Saving up for the 500mm PF.

You say you don't have to give ISO a second thought. I've been using Manual with auto ISO on my D6 but have been reluctant to go beyond 12,800 ISO. What is your max ISO?
Thanks, George. I find my 300 and 500 pf lenses to be incredibly sharp; I'm addicted to the portability of hand carrying and holding with a 700 mm reach with the 500 and 1.4 :)
My comment about ISO was a bit relative to the Z9 performance with ISO, which is good but can't get by the technical reality that high megapixels surpasses the ability to control noise (sorry for the non engineering explanation there). If you note the ISO was 2200 on the Junco shot; overcast and I was in the trees with a grey bird. Guessing I was on auto ISO at that point; lookin' mighty dark in the viewfinder and forgetting I was on the D6 likely cranked the auto exposure a bit, which worked out okay :) I used noise reduction software in post but I didn't really notice much. I can't remember what I've set as my max (will be likely what Steve uses); generally I still like to keep it as low as possible, but the D6 ability to shoot at high ISO doesn't have me overly worrying about it. With the Z9 I think about ISO a lot (shooting early in the day as I most often do) -- in fact I've mostly stopped using auto ISO except for exposure check shots as I'm a lazy photographer and too often discover I've forgotten about it and it's at unacceptable levels -- which for me is anything getting close to 2000.

I'm not Rick

Nice shot. For me, I would be challenged to have a working collection of lens. I think I have 500 PF and Sigma 150 macro left in the F mount. Other than that, only Z glass.

Really cool shots !! ... my D6 and D850 were great cameras and along with my older D500 and D4S took a lot of citizen science bird ID shots and put a lot of images on walls.

With firmware 3.01 and now 3.10 I am happier than ever with the Z9 being a replacement for the D6 & D850 and for a run and gun birder like me the Z800 and Z9 are the best tools I have used.

I have a Zemlin on my Z800 ... great hood and the pinch lens cap is far more efficient than the OEM draw bag.

Thanks! At the moment I only have f mount lenses for wildlife (or macro). My challenges with the Z9 out of action is on the short and wide end of things -- pretty much all z glass.

Thanks Ken. The AF tracking in the Z9 does very much make my two cameras utterly different experiences that's for sure; for me not a case of better/not better, just gotta call on different process. That said if the Kestral had chosen to fly (which I'm thinking the other 15 photographers standing around him were waiting for as I moved on) I'm doubting on the settings I'd chosen certainly I had the talent to have grabbed a BIF shot with my D6 :) I've got a Zemlin cap for my 180-400. So impressed with the quality I'll almost certainly be replacing the 500 hood with the Zemlin version.

After dropping and loosing too many lens hoods into water and other places I now always have a few strips of gaffer tape on all my lens hoods which can reuse to lock the hood onto the lens.

Yes i feel different is a good way to describe it with the D6 Z9, i mean both are awesome.
I use a D6 rental exclusively for low light high iso critical fast action shoots where i cant afford to stuff up or fail on.
More likely i am the only one feeling like this but i actually prefer using the D6 over the Z9 i have, i don't have to concentrate so much on what i am doing, that's just me of course.

I do love my D850 and previously D6 D5 D4s...yes the Z9 is awesome but very different for me, i just need to concentrate all the time to get the best out of it. Again that's me.

Lovely record shots by the way

Only an opinion
