SURPRISE! MAC OS now appears to support Nikon Z8 RAW files!

Hey Ralph, It’s not there. I have Ventura 13.6.4 which is up to date for my 2017 27” retina display unit. I tried to download Sonoma so I could load Z8/raw. Apple’s site said my computer is not compatible with Sonoma. All the other 2017 models are…. Go figure..🤔
Larry, I‘m running Monterey which is older than Ventura on my 2014 mini and the Z8 is showing up. Make sure you have “install data files and security updates checked off “ as well as “check for updates” in the advanced section of “software updates” in the system preference section. Even though you can’t upgrade to Sonoma Apple has been sending out several security updates for older MacOS‘s . I just received on last week for Monterey.

The settings menu has changed within the last 6 months. It has been streamlined to resemble the iPhone and iPad. A lot of items are no longer available for choices. When you say “checked off” do you mean selected or shut off?

Selected. Those files will automatically be installed usually at night. Also see if there are any security updates for ventura. Usually Apple releases security updates for all Mac OS’s at the same time. I’ve installed several over the last month or two.

Today, 2/16/2024, while transferring some photos from my memory card to a folder on an external drive where I keep all of my Z8 photos, I was shocked (and pleasantly surprised) to see their thumbnails appear, for the first time ever, on my Mac's screen!

I went into my Mac's "About this Mac" section, then clicked on the "More Info" button, then the "System Report" button, then scrolled down to the "Software>RAW support" section and clicked on it. I then scrolled down to the "Nikon" section, and lo and behold, for the first time since the Nikon Z8 camera came out in May of last year, IT WAS LISTED AS A SUPPORTED CAMERA!

I went into the Apple "Photos" app to see if a test photo I'd imported into it last August was no longer a blank, gray square. And sure enough, the photo NOW APPEARED as one would normally expect it to!

YAHOOOOOO! (It's about TIME!)

p.s. I am running MacOS 14.3.1, by the way.
Hi, I checked my Macbook this way and it lists the z8, but it still won't display the RAW files and nor will Darktable display them even though its the latest version. What might I do?

Which type of RAW are you shooting? it doesn’t support the high efficiency RAW but it does support Lossless.
