Tamron lens for z mount

I am very excited to hear there will be some third party lens with auto focus for the Z system. While the 70 300 is not a lens I am interested in, Tamron does make other lenses for the Sony mount that I would take a very close look at. If you know how agreements like the one that appears to have happened between Nikon and Tamron work I would love to hear about it. I would also like to hear what you guys think about having some viable third party options for the z system.

I think that there is a close working relationship between Nikon and Tamron. The 28-75mm Nikkor is a re-badged Tamron apparently.

I shoot with Nikon and Fuji XT. Always loved 85mm f1.8 lenses so when I got the opportunity to get a little used Viltrox 56mm f1.4 (85mm f1.8 FF equivalent) for my Fuji XT-4 I jumped at it. This lens impressed me so much with its all metal construction - inc the hood - the build quality and sharpness - and the fact that you can download a Lightroom profile for it that I started looking at their 85mm f1.8 for the Nikon Z mount.

Not sure if there is any agreement, but after doing my due diligence I bought a Viltrox 85mm f1.8 mk2 for my Z6ii. Consensus in the reviews that I looked at was that it is 95% as good as the Nikkor Z 85mm f1.8 S at under half of the price. When I got mine the Nikkor was around £700 in the UK. My Viltrox cost just £295 inc delivery. Well under half price.

Build quality is excellent and I'm Very happy with it. The mk 1 version AFAIK is optically identical but was over-engineered, resulting in it being a bit heavy. The mk 2 is lighter and has a plastic lens hood v the metal one of the mk1.

Tamron makes lenses for Nikon, Sony and more and have for years. I have take a lot of my best images over the years with Tamron glass so happy to see they are starting to make agreements with Nikon to market for the Z mount.

The deal with Nikon and Sony is that if Tamron makes a lens for Sony or Nikon then they do not market the same lens under the Tamron name for a specified period of time (that time has varied over the years).

Hence why you will see some odd focal lengths offered by Tamron for Sony that do not match the same focal lengths from Sony. For example there is a Sony 200-600 but not a Tamron branded Sony mount 200-600.

I pre-ordered the Tamron 70-300 for my wife to use on here Z50 to replace her Tamron f mount 18-400 and 100-400 to go along with her Nikon 400 f/4.5. She is into small and light and talking to one of the most knowledgeable glass guys I know in the industry he thought she would be well served with the Tamron 70-300 and Nikon 400 f/4.5 on the Z50 for what she shoots.

I've had Tamron lenses for Nikon F mount in the past and been happy with them. I've already got the 100-400 S so this one won't be for me.

I have have 7 Tamron f mount lenses and 3 Sigma lenses in f mount and they have performed well for me over the years. Many of the ones I bought are rated higher by DxOMark.com than their Nikkor f mount equivalents. I really hope both Tamron and Sigma start releasing Z mount glass before I buy much more Nikon Z glass as it is breaking the bank.

Great to see Tamron and Nikon finally making an agreement to let Tamron put out a Z mount lens. I had a similar count of Tamron and Sigma until I went mirrorless and sold them off when I decided to go Z mount and get some of the features like the control ring that I use for EV control etc..

I use only Nikkor lenses, always have. but many like Sigma and Tamron. Woops, I do have an 8mm Rokinon, don't recall using it. I will asap, forgot about it.

If you use Nikon lenses then you most likely have used Tamron made lenses or at least those made under patent agreements with Tamron or with Tamron parts. Tamron has been that ubiquitous in the industry for many years. For years Tamron could not market equivalent or better glass because of sales contracts/agreements with Nikon and others. When the time frame on many of those agreements ended that is when we saw the emergence of Tamron G2 lenses and they were as good or better than the same lens size and type from Nikon. That process started over again with the advent of the Z Mount. Until now Tamron has been able reach agreements with Sony but not Nikon. Will be interesting to see if Tamron will be able to market equal to or better quality for Nikon over the next year. When you are an OEM supplier and sell under your own brand name sales, marketing and corporate agreements with your OEM customers is a crazy game. I played it first hand in the Farm Machinery industry but only hear about it from contacts in the photography industry.

You make a good point, I do hope that Nikon will let Tamron produce higher quality lenses like their G2 lenses.

I cant hurt Nikon.
At least some people can afford a lens to fill a gap that was too expensive before.
For me i'll only be buying Nikon lenses.
I have 60 year old Nikon lenses that may be old but still work perfectly well.
That way there will be no compatibility or quality problems in my future...🦘

I don't know why someone would buy this over the Nikon lens. It's a little more compact and lighter, I guess that might attract some buyers. I feel like this should have been priced a few hundred less and not for basically the same price as the Nikon 180-600.

Have used the Tamron 150-600 G2 for several years with mixed feelings, and had been waiting for a 3rd party high quality long zoom. But comparing this to the Nikon 180-600, I'm not sure how competitive it will be. External zoom vs Nikons internal and 100 mm more on the long end for Nikon both favor the Nikon. Advantages seem to be It is lighter, 3.8 lbs vs 4.31 lbs, smaller even extended (11.3in) than the 180-600mm (12.5 in) and it comes with an arca-swiss lens plate(!). What is left to be seen is the image quality, AF capability and if it can take Nikon TC's rather than Tamron specific TC's. Will have to wait and see who this lens will be for and why.

i was thinking similar. seems like they have to win on price and get people for whom the 180-600 is out of budget. guessing the price may fall a bit after introduction maybe?

It is lighter and cheaper came in at $1,199 USD. Not sure why Tamron and Nikon show weight without tripod collar at least Tamron shows the weight for the collar and foot assembly in their specs unlike Nikon.
