Telephoto Lens ‘That Has Never Existed Before’? Sigma 300-600 f4

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Maybe it will be the first lens designed using this formula for an aberration free lens:

It will be very interesting to see what they do. If it is truly revolutionary, Nikon may be shooting themselves in the foot for not allowing Sigma to produce Z mount lenses. If it is just the right lens, some Nikon users (myself included) may jump ship to Canon or Sony to use it.
They already had 200-500 F2.8 before, why to step down? :)
Only superman can handhold Sigma's 200-500mm F:2.8.

According to Yamaki San, Sigma CEO, in his answers in interview “Yes, so sports photographers and wildlife photographers might be very excited about the lens.”

Interesting, for years it was pointed out that aftermarket lenses are cheap consumer plastic type lenses, and Nikon was made in Japan for quality reasons, and their lenses would last for years, yet Sigma has always been made in Japan, Nikon lenses and cameras in whole or in parts to be assembled in Thailand today are nearly all made in China.

I think a 100-400 F2 F2..8 Light and compact, a 200-500 like Steve says in F4 really sounds good as long as its small and light.

When walking around anywhere often a Zoom really fits the bill, it would be great if it has the performance of a F2, F2.8, or F4 to boot.

Friday I did a walk through the ACT botanical gardens in the rain forest section, Z8 50mm 1.8, was all I had with me, it worked well, I wish I had brought a zoom, at least the 70-200 or 28- 300- or 28- 400 or a 100-400.
Digressing the only thing I noticed was the battery life was incredibly short, and the bottom left corner of the body was extremely hot for no cause by me.
A colleague was using a Fuji, with a large flash and mini soft box, all hand held, he had a 50mm lens.

28-400 with a F2.8 or even F4 would be lovely.
Remember Sigma says its never been done before.

Hope Santa is listening.

LOL! A soft woman's voice exudes from the lens, "Autofocus detects a bird. Are you sure you want to have the aperture at f11?"
"To request help, press Menu. To change ISO, press ISO and turn the wheel. To change... " - <20 other options>. And at the very end, after waiting for all options for 5 minutes - "To change aperture, rotate the front wheel". After rotation - "Are you sure? Yes or No? To cancel, press Menu, to confirm, press Ok". And no way to press anything until voice stops.

I would like it to have an audio feature that reminds me to CHECK MY SETTINGS frequently enough to keep me shooting but not so frequent as to become annoying!
Like having your camera say this?

“The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the red zone.”

The extended quote linked below is pretty funny. It’s from the classic Airplane movie (one of my favs).

Key parameters for possible super telephotos covering the frequently preferred range of focal lengths and lens speeds.

The weight is an informed guess, obviously. This is taking into account the trends over the past 3 decades by Nikon to build lighter exotic telephotos, and the features and innovations of current designs for guidance. Some of the materials and designs to reduce weight of an exotic telephoto include special glass of a high refractive index including fluorite; honeycombed chassis, lighter polymers (e.g. Seerebo, Mg plastics); novel optical designs (e.g. rear elements of the 400mm f4.5S).

A telephoto with an integral Dual-Teleconverter has not been produced, but it must be feasible and optical engineers have probably considered such a design. A dual TC could possibly share some of the elements, optimized in a 3 stage mechanism.

My guess would be a dual TC on something like a 200mm, with 1.4x and 2x built in. 200, 280 and 400mm would do nicely for sports photographers and if it's a 2.8/4/5.6 aperture it could be very popular

We may get our answer on March 1, 2025.

Sigma has made some decent lenses over the years, even if the zoom direction is wrong (for Nikon). They have all had one thing in common….they are HEAVY, if Canikon etc can make the same or similar lighter, why put up with the weight and potential incompatibility issues.

It will likely not be for Canon or Nikon, because Sigma is not permitted to make any Z mount lenses and I think only APS-C R mount lenses. Sigma full frame mirrorless lenses are for Sony and Leica. The heavy weight was for their SLR lenses; the new Sigma 500 f5.6 for mirrorless I believe is light weight? And if, as they say, it is a lens that has never existed, surely people will be interested.

A minor correction. Sigma makes 3 APS Z mount lenses currently. Rumor has it that they will do full frame at some point.

It will be interesting what they do, hopefully they can put their products on a diet.

The new lens prognosticators are having a bunch of fun with this one. I personally like @bleirer ’s thought that it’s fabricated from 6pack plastic..😅 Now there’s a man with imagination….. However…Long ago and far removed from many forum member’s memory was the wildly anticipated and hyped lens from Nikkor…….
Meet the first ever zoom telephoto lens…. The cutting edge 43-86mm 70’s dud! Yup, still got it…..A reminder not to get too excited about rumors…

It seemed like a nice idea at the time (and also in the Nikkorex), but the results gave zoom lenses in general a bad name for a long time.
I think we got over it, but it took a while. Nice condition F Photomic. Thanks for the memories.

Wow!…someone remembers this lens…amazing.. might throw a curve to the forum and use it on a Z to post some pix😂

I might be curious if a hi MegPix sensor would look different from the days of Tri-X and D76 when shot through the 43-86?
I guess I'm officially an old guy as I recall a kid in Hi School having that lens (permanently attached) on the Nikkorex, a body that did not even have an instant-return mirror.
That was all 60+ years ago. It has been a bit of an adventure since my start shooting in 1960. Gone from Alpa to Zeiss and back. Still fun. All the best.

It would be pretty soft with lots of chromatic aberration.

Tri-X has a large grain structure which would cover a lot of that up especially with 35mm. I quickly switched to Atimol and Acufine Developers to minimize the grain. Tri-X is still a favorite but in 4x5 using FX-15 Developer.

Another Old Guy.

Wow! Two other old guys…now there’s three! I also shot a lot of tri-x. The contrast was good…. But plus-x was a tad better with grain and panatomic-x @ 32asa was really fine but the contrast was terrible. I’m probably mis-remembering some stuff too. I remember using microdol-x and Agfa paper (brovara, portriga?) when I could find it…. Memory lane is full of potholes ya’ know..😅
