Note the fundamental distinction between normal AF overrides versus a handoff, which leverages focus persistence to maintain the focus point position. AF Hand offs are restricted to AF modes under the cameras full control (AutoAF, 3d and fortuitously the Group AF modes, notably C1 and C2. The critical difference is these AFmodes inherit the precise position of the active focus point

The best way to learn is to experiment with different Custom configurations of assigned Fn buttons to find which works best for you. Options include Fn1, Fn2; Display, Lens Fn etc. It is critical to practice on flying birds, and energetic pets - leaping/playing cats and dogs
