Wow! @fcotterill what is a technique for switching between the AF modes - assign to one of the front buttons? And presumably in this case the long thin C1 rectangle was preassigned that way? I need to learn how to do this! Thank you.

Here's the thread to read through -

Note the fundamental distinction between normal AF overrides versus a handoff, which leverages focus persistence to maintain the focus point position. AF Hand offs are restricted to AF modes under the cameras full control (AutoAF, 3d and fortuitously the Group AF modes, notably C1 and C2. The critical difference is these AFmodes inherit the precise position of the active focus point

You can have different sized Custom Area AF modes in respective shooting banks on Z8 and Z9 (and presumably also using the U* menu setups of the Z6 III and Z50 II). I prefer a smaller tighter rectangle 5*1 for mammals with a 1*1 Spot. Subject detection must be enabled for a .

The best way to learn is to experiment with different Custom configurations of assigned Fn buttons to find which works best for you. Options include Fn1, Fn2; Display, Lens Fn etc. It is critical to practice on flying birds, and energetic pets - leaping/playing cats and dogs :)

It takes time and effort to train muscle memory.
