Unfortunate truth - Nikon will always be inferior to Sony and Canon

A friend of mine is a professional photographer (artsy portraits and landscapes), repped by top galleries, been in major museums (has prints sell for as much as $20k each), etc. and the fact is her quick iPhone snapshots are often fantastic images.
An iphone is very capable of capturing photos like Robert Capa which is wonderful but is impossible to compare with Mark Smith, Steve Perry, Melissa Groo, etc....

Nearly half of the 1 million DSLRs shipped in first 5 months of 2021 went to Europe ( 426k DSLR vs 324k mirrorless). It will be interesting to see if this trend persists or is the slower end of wave..... trending to Mirrorless.

Thom H keeps buzzing on about Nikon converting F-Nikkors to Z-mount. It may be feasible to upgrade a G lens to E aperture but how many G models have not been already phased out, or on the way out in the exotic lineup for F-mount (eg 300 f2.8G, 200 f2G)? It is about a decade back, ( < 2013) that Japanese engineers likely identified the benefits of electronic apertures for high spec DSLRs (ie 800 f5.6E for the D4), for higher fps photography.

As for the new Z Autofocus system, Nikon has emphasized the differences repeatedly: including paired stepper motors; and how the Z protocol is better 'wired' etc....let alone other fundamental differences. The attributes of the focusing elements in the F-mount exotic telephotos were optimized for speed and precision of USM mechanisms (usually ring type USM - Nikon calls S type). Besides different protocols, the torque etc differs from stepper motors and probably the mechanics of the focusing trains between F vs Z telephotos. AF-P Nikkors use stepper technology, so are most suited to the Z AF system, apparently (besides quieter for video and smoother).

[EDIT] Thus the 500 f5.6E PF has a SWM ultrasonic motor vs the AFP in the 70-300 f/4.5-6.3G AFP FX. Last but not least, the 120-300 f2.8E SR teardown by Lensrentals, confirms Nikon has kept the F and Z Nikkors firmly divided. How is going to pay for the labour costs alone for a one-way "Z conversion" of such a complex optical device? And lock out any future use witha D6 etc - let alone assuming such a notion of "conversion" has any firm relevance to the real-world (beyond an influencer's keyboard).

We are in a world of significant change, In the TV show "War of the worlds" some people were escaping the monsters by jumping into an old car, one person said to the driver how did you ever manage to get this old car started, the driver replied i just turned the key the car "it has no electronics"............
Our road side service here in OZ says that 85% of call outs are caused by electronic or electrical issues, Interesting times ahead when the KLM or Miles get up.
Hence we have a massive surge in sales for older cars.

The shift to mirror less is simply driven by the next generation of the internet connectivity and platforms entering the third cycle called video, video is driven by advertiser demand and public viewer demand like U TUBE Instagram etc. Internet 1st generation was all text, Second text and photo, 3rd is all Video now that 5g 6g 8 g is looming we can stream a 3minute video as fast as sending a text, we can also introduce driver less cars, we need to not only reduce fossil fuels for the environment sake but to accommodate massive increases in micro radiation levels for the expanding digital world.....

The single most popular device used by the global population for video and stills is the smart phone.
For the three musketeers Canon Sony Nikon to ever survive they need to go smaller faster and be more integrated with innovation in the changing world we live in or be left behind, above all they need to get into video seriously.
Video killed the radio star, Video will kill the still photographic star, Canon has stated we need to be faster sharper with maximum connectivity, we need the users stills and video to betaken and streamed immediately to your in box, or Google cloud storage, we need to focus on high end video or unit sales and market share will continue to fall.

The move into silent smooth lighter smaller mirror less cameras and lenses is paramount for video. Panasonic has stated that with their camera and detachable lenses they are only making their mirror less cameras and lenses for video, no longer still photography as stills can come from 8k video which it dose already with a 30 mb file that is getting better and better. Why else has the $13 billion camera industry gone hybrid.
So there will always be still photography as there is film.
We are no longer wanted or needed, Watching Surf TV yesterday, the events were fully covered by land based TV networks, and high end drones, there were no land based photographers with still cameras like myself using a D850 on a 800 mm lens or 600 F4, We were no longer needed unless we had RED video cameras with a Canon 600 mm F4, the several in water camera men with their underwater camera cases were all taking video no longer stills.
IBIS Camera sensors Yes making silent lenses sharper smoother silent, with camera IBIS is essential for Canon Nikon Sony to survive, they also need to follow closely the food chain of changing consumer needs or be eaten them selves.

Only and opinion
