Upcoming Nikon F-mount Lens Instant Rebate Program

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

wonder if the $ amounts have changed from the original plan?
I don't know. The current rebate program in Europe has a 10% discount on a bunch of lenses including F-mount FL lenses but you can't easily compare the two. I heard that Nikon's intent is to sell out of the lenses in the program I originally mentioned.

Depending on the product the Nikon European market share is in the region of 20-25% of total sales.
DSLR sales are falling anyway and EEC regulations prevent further D850 being imported after the end of this year - unless upgraded to accept a USB-c charger.

My speculation is Nikon has decided this EEC action will cut total world wide sales significantly and in consequence has started to end their DSLR body AND F mount lens production as there seems not much point in trying to sell pro grade lenses without "affordable" pro-grade bodies in production.

The new EU legislation does not apply to products introduced on the market before the legislation took effect, so new D850 can still imported and sold in the EU. I also remember reading something about it only applying to appliances with non-removable batteries, not sure anymore and a cursory search didn't get me any results (internet search really sucks these days, different topic so).

That Nikon is going to exit the DSLR market, and F-mount lenses along that, is old news anyways and has nothing to do with USB-C charging and the EU.

The D850 (and D7500) now has the PD compatible MH-34 charger and latest ENEL15c battery that can be sold separately as fully PD compatible; and/or there is the option to charge the ENEL18d in the MH-33 in case of the gripped D850.

The respective PD chargers also support the D780 and D6, which also have USB-C ports.

Yes, in any case according to some sources the EU regulations apply only to electronic devices with NON-Removable batteries.... But the EU legalese is as clear as mud and some retailers and importers may bend to over caution of bureaucracy and threat of penalties

Official Legal Guide:

Yeah, as with all regulations, one can assume that 90% of internet commentators get it wrong. And the remaining 10% get it right by accident because the misunderstood said regulations, drew the wrong conclusion based in wrong assumptions and got lucky.

The resulting memes and reviews so exist for eternity...

Nikon will be announcing another Instant Rebate program to close out F-mount lenses by the end of this month. The lenses in this program are pro-level lenses - 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm and 800mm, as well as PC and other top end primes and long zooms. The new program is expected to be announced July 29 and will go until September - but may be extended if inventory is available. Rebates range from $400 to $4800.

These items have limited inventory at most retailers but Nikon does have stock in the US and Japan. If something is not in stock, it can be ordered.

This is going to be the last chance to buy new copies of these lenses. If you are using a Nikon DSLR or will use an adapter on Z cameras, these include some very good deals.
Those are indeed steep discounts, but high quality and condition used F-mount lenses still trade at a very substantial discount to Nikon's "sale" prices. Given that F lenses all represent "old" technology, I'd have a hard time justifying buying new over used, even considering the warranty.

Looks like the deals are live and a lot of Z lenses and bodies are rebated as well. I was hoping the 600pf was going to be discounted and it is! I decided to move from the 500pf to 600pf. Maybe if I come into sudden wealth I’ll get the 600tc :)

Good luck all who have been waiting for discounts.

That 600mm PF looks awfully tempting. Anyone care to convince me to "go for it"? My biggest concern is the OOF quality.....having been spoiled by the 600mm TC and leery of PF lenses after having the 500 PF and selling because I was unhappy with it.

I haven't regretted my 600PF purchase since selling my 400/4.5, for handling/ balance on my Z9 (especially) for BIF it's superb, and a step up from the 500PF (I sold 2 yrs ago) IMO.
Sure the 600TC's bokeh @f/4 will always look better than f/6.3, however one would be hard pressed to see any difference in real world picture quality.

It's totally impractical for me to take both a Z600TC AND my Z400TC to Africa, so the 600PF fills that void beautifully.
My Africa kit now comprises, the Z 24-70/4, Z 70-200, Z400TC plus the 600PF. As we impatiently wait for RAW Pre-capture on the Z9. ;)

Thanks, Marc! I'm surprised you don't miss the 840mm of the 600mm TC! I use it a lot for birds and even mammals as we usually stay a respectful distance away from the subjects.

As good as that 600TC is, my 400TC (to 560mm) being an f/2.8 for dawn/dusk is king. One can (usually) only take the one big prime and hence why that 600PF suits my needs.

My Z400TC is the best prime I've ever owned in 40 yrs on safari.

The Z 600 mm PF is a very good lens. But I’m sure its not the Z 600 mm TC.

I have the Z 400 mm f4.5, Z 400 mm TC, Z 600 mm PF and Z 800 mm PF. I do not have the Z 600 mm TC, although I have seen it in action in Botswana. I used to have, but no longer have, the F mount 300 mm PF and 500 mm PF.

For me, the reason to pick the Z 400 f4.5 over the Z 400 mm TC or the Z 600 mm PF over the Z 600 mm TC in a given situation is size, weight, and cost. Depending on the circumstances, these factors can be quite important. And the smaller/lighter lenses are very good on their own if you can live with the narrower aperture and no internal TC. (I was hooked on f2.8/f4 and the built-in TC on my Z 400 mm TC on a trip to Botswana earlier this year. I had avoided the long exotics due to weight and size concerns.)

The Z 400 mm TC and Z 800 PF are great lenses. But they are too big to comfortably use in my kayak. So when I go out in my kayak, I take the Z 400 f4.5 or the Z 600 PF instead.

This summer I used my Z 600 mm PF in my kayak extensively, usually on a Z8 but occasionally on a Z9. I also often used it with the 1.4x TC, giving me 840 mm f9. At times I took the Z 180-600 on a second Z8 to give me access to shorter focal lengths. Given I am shooting the Z 600 mm PF at f6.3 or f9 (with the 1.4x TC), it can be harder to blur a close background, but I got many shots I liked. And there are times I stopped down for depth of field.

Based on my subjective reaction, I’d take the Z 600 mm PF over the F 500 mm PF. But I did not have them at the same time, so I have not done any objective testing. I also like to photograph birds a lot, so the extra focal length is nice. Given its smaller size and weight (compared to the Z 400 mm TC or Z 600 mm TC), it is a joy to use and easy to travel with.

Normally, I’d say it might be worth renting the Z 600 mm PF to try it out. But I’m not sure how long the $500 off sale for it will last. That’s certainly attractive.
