What’s Your Go-to focus mode for nonBIF subjects (Z8,Z9)

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

There isnt a go-to focus mode for non-BIF IMHO
Having custom button access to spot and 3D is invaluable for me. My spot is part of recall funtions (hold) so an instant switch to spot + lower shutter speed + auto ISO
I cant go without 3D (on a button) because I want to track when the subject and scene is right for doing so
That leaves me with only 4 AF areas that I can cycle on the movie button, 2 of which are good for non-BIFs if I dont use the other Non BIF buttons

They are the two i’m leaning towards as well. I always have my single point programmed to my Fn button on the lens. It’s a natural location for me. After a couple trips out with the z8 i’m leaning toward 3d with subject detection as my default. But i have my f2 programmed with wide large with subject detection as well.

I am guessing non flying birds so my AF-Area Modes for them. Which different than other for other critters, people included or inanimate subjects :)

As others have noted I do not have just one for non BIF but have fast go to options depending on cover, distance etc.

My default on my Z9 is subject detection bird on and shutter button (my primary focus button) using wide area custom1 at 5x3 .

Other buttons are programmed to go to af-area mode + afon:
fn1 wide area custom2 at 1x1.
fn 2 Auto Area AF
AFON button to 3D.

Single point does not use subject detection and is my go to if subject detection struggles.

With the ability to quickly cycle through AF-Area Modes I have them limited to single point, wide area custom1, wide area custom2, 3D and Auto Area AF.
I have my video record button set up to cycle AF-Area Modes and my Lens function ring to do the same on my Z 600 f/4 TC.

I have the cycle af modes (Fn2) set to go through single point > wide area (square animal SD) > wide area (rectangle animal SD (C1) ) > 3D.

For BIF, and actually birds anywhere; a joystick press takes the camera to recall shooting functions (hold); 1/1600, f4.0, wide area rectangle bird SD, 15fps.

I use single point a lot.

by spot I guess you mean single point AF-area mode or are you saying spot metering?
