Z6iii - Bird detection

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

For me the main difference between the z6iii and the z8-9 is the fact that’s it only has 24m p vs 46. This means you need bigger glass to get as big an image or closer which is often not an option. Can it work. For sure I remember shooting with a friend using his canon 5d mkiii and he got superb shots. Personally I wouldn’t get a z6iii with the ability to get a refurb z8 for not much more and have all the advantages it offers.

When I was first trying to decide if I should buy a Z6III I did lots of Googling and found a lot of people doing tests and reviews. There are a ton of them. I remember finding one that goes into a lot of talk about the Z6III and the Z9 where he actually goes out and shoots birds in flight and shows what he saw and explains what he did and how he did it. The Z6III is not as good as the Z9 and Nikon doesn't claim it is. But the guy in this video found that it is not bad considering the price difference.
I am not sure if something has to be done to make a link but that is the address I found - a lot of talk but also a lot of showing the tracking and focus - sometimes hard to see the little box but it does get down to about eye size at times. Good enough for me but I am not a pro and can't afford a Z9.
That is what I have found Z6III not as good as Z9 but not bad.

For low light the viewfinder in the Z6III is amazing and yes it helps with focus. That said ... if I had to choose between my Z9 or Z6III being a birder the Z9 would be an easy choice for me.

Yes I can imagine that viewfinder must be great. My biggest issue with the z8 is in certain light especially very bright light it can be hard to see the subject especially if small and fast. But I wouldn’t trade that for a camera with only half the mps.

steve perry mentioned in his e-book he found bird detection better then animal worked .

i tried it today myself and i couldn’t get animal to lock in on the bird yet bird did it immediately

so it may be very subject dependent and distance
What you found is what I have experienced. You do not say which camera you used, but not the Z6III since it does not have subject detection bird.
