Z9 Firmware 4.0 Available

Some great additional features, but I love the addition of the focus distance when manual focusing. However, focus distance doesn't seem to come up in NX Studio so, I wonder if there will be an update for focus distance info in NX Studio?
Yes. Lance. At the beginning of the post it states that there is a new update to NX studio. Other software was updated as well.

The return of the Delay Exposure function is long overdue (as Ricci mentioned). And it's now in my i-Menu

Another shoutout for adding Subject Distance into the livestream (y) This feature should prove equally useful for finetuning the Auto Capture settings.

Reading through the new Suppl Manual, there are several updates that are likely to make a difference in different genres eg finer settings in Bracketing; important updates to Video settings etc

The Auto Capture Menu is certainly a major addition into Nikon's armory. This could well represent a spillover form their R&D in robotics. They have been shrewd to leverage features in the existing AF modes into AutoCapture, notably AI Subject Recognition and AutoAF. The applications are designed primarily for sports: athletics, baseball, cricket etc, and extreme sports such as a camera setup on mountain bike trails. Timely release as major sporting events are rolling out in the N Hemisphere summer

It will be extremely useful in remote camera setups for wildlife: the settings allow deep potential for customization with up to 5 User Presets (like mini Banks), and individual profiles can be renamed and copied etc. So Triggering Criteria: Motion, Subject type; Distance - eg turning off zones in the frame to avoid moving vegetation, Min and Max distances framing the Trigger domain; and ability to set movement criteria eg direction, speed etc besides the trigger distance to capture a burst; and all of these menu options appear to be highly customizable.

If I can get this to work with F-glass, my underwater remote photography will be taken to the next level. Lets hope it's able to do all the cool stuff like detect, focus, shoot with flash with minimal delay.

Improved AF. Blank statement.
Gota know what it is…
From Nikon Ricci and Mat Irwin YouTube videos
1/ improved focus tracking speed
2/ improved focus tracking with smaller subjects
3/ improved subject detection in low light or with low contrast subjects.

I speculate Steve will test out all three more effectively than many of us can - possibly to be followed up with a video.

What Nikon did not do is implement some of the Z8 features (nor delete Z9 menu item d3)
  • 10-bit HEIF support
  • New Tone mode menu item (SDR/HLG, plus Set Picture Control (HLG))
  • Portrait impression balance
  • Skin softening function (both still and video)
  • AF improvements (dedicated Airplane detection, silhouette focus, smaller face detect)

Geeze, wouldn't update, says the battery is too low. There was over 60% left. Put a new battery in, there's 96% left after the update and as it had been sitting a while it might not have been 100% to begin with, took less than 4%

Query - focus distance in viewfinder.

Although I have my lenses with a display function set to show distance in feet, the new distance scale feature in the viewfinder is in meters.

Where in the menus do I get the viewfinder to display distance in feet?

What about those new Slow mo? How many FPS? Can I hit a FN button while I’m recording regular video to toggle Slow mo?
Unfortunately slow-mo appears to be limited to H.264 8-bit 24p(5x)/25p(4x)/30p(4x) fps only. Pretty useless from what I can see -- you're better off just shooting 120p with higher bit rate. No sound is recorded, but that's pretty common (except for Sony). I was so hoping Nikon would add 240fps -- even if limited to HD. :(

I know you'd figure it out but here is the blurb from the Supplemental Firmware Update Manual

What’s the point of slow mo? I could record 120fps in 4k until now? Maybe the idea is that the camera slows it down without the need to post processing?
