Z9 Firmware 4.0 Available

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Just watched Ricci's video -- the auto capture implementation options are impressive...Nikon really did their homework on this. I wonder if Morten Hilmer had some input. (Ricci's been using Auto Capture since March).

The addition of Auto Capture on my Z9 has significantly raised the possibility of buying a Z8 ... the Z9 would be used as a trap video camera and I'd carry the Z8 for stand-off opportunity captures for scenarios like shooting birds nests etc.

Playback Option Choice - Zoom or focus position. FYI these are found under the Command Dial settings and you can set the back one and front one differently.

This raises a question for me. Has anyone seen a really good video on how to effectively do playback including bursts and the other options. I seem to struggle with it.

For example if Playback is on card 2 is the only way to go to card 1 by using the iMenu?

WARNING i’ve seen one report that the megadapt etz21 sony-e to nikon-z adapter doesn’t work after the update. (note that adapter does take fw updates so it seems likely it'll get fixed)

UPDATE: it's reported that the most recent fw on the metadapt site works. so you may just need to be up to date.

Updated the Z9 and messed around with it a bit in the backyard (were some barn swallows zipping around).

One thing I noticed is that subject detection is picking up the birds quite a bit earlier (smaller in the frame) with the new firmware. For me personally, it makes zero practical difference (I won't start shooting until the subject is a reasonable size in the frame anyway); but something that stood out all the same.

But anecdotal evidence and all that. Take it for what it's worth.

I’m not sure if if was in Ricci’s video or in the supplemental fw updates manual, when using auto capture, I think the distance information only shows in meters even though the camera has an option to choose between feet/meters.

it sounded like what wouldn’t work was the distance settings
If subject size works, that'll be good enough, I can use that to compensate for distance. If I know I'm shooting a frog and i want it to only shoot when it fills up 1/5th of the frame, that's good enough for me.
Unfortunately, no fisheye native z-lens exists, so I wouldn't be able to use it underwater easily (unless I did macro with their new Z lens)

Not sure if there's been any feedback here yet - above.... I checked my 58 f1.4G, 500 f5.6E PF and 180-400 f4E TC.....

Sad reality none shows up the focus distance, on Z9 with FW 4.0, although focus-peaking still works as well as before. Oh well...... it's a hard world...one cannot have them all ;)

I have three immediate thoughts on autocapture:

1) So I can set my camera on a tripod, point at home plate, hit 'go', and get an entire baseball game of every single ball-on-bat frame in the game? <mind blown>

2) Will this be useful for macro? My biggest struggle with bug macro has always been hitting exact focus and firing on a bug while moving back and forth, while the bug goes about its business. Could I set 1:2 focus distance and the camera will fire every time it sees center AF at that distance? It seems all I have to do is maneuver the camera around and frames will pop off whenever my bug is in focus?

3) If we have a camera that can automatically shoot when it sees a subject, and we have a video feature that can zoom the frame, we are just some fancy software away from setting down a camera at a wider angle and having a software pan&zoom to follow the action. I'm thinking a hummingbird feeder framed loose at 400mm, or a wide angle watching an athlete (ie: high jumper) moving through a frame.

This is a pretty exciting feature for some very specific photos. Can't wait to play with it!

wonder if Nikon will ever synch the firmware for the Z 8 and Z 9

I'm sure that even if they have a single dev team for each camera, they have a different QA cycle for each camera, I'd rather see the updates when they're ready, but from a PR standpoint it might be better to sync them so the howls from photographers isn't too loud when the "wrong camera" is updated first.

i would think so. from a development perspective it’s more work to have two. my guess is they had two development streams, one focusing on the new hw and they didn’t want to destabilize or delay it with new features. although who knows how the extra features ended up in that stream and didn’t make it into the main z9 stream 😅. but it would be inefficient to keep them separate

Return of Exposure Delay mode is a big plus for me, hope that is included in the hinted at Z 8 firmware update too.

I wonder if @Steve will be able to maintain keeping the Z 8 and Z 9 in the same eBook, maybe Steve will wait for the Z 8 firmware before releasing the eBook updates, else it will be a lot of work only to have to redo again when the Z 8 is updated.
