Hopefully the firmware 4 will help with nestbox photography as it is predictable.

There is a separate thread on Auto Capture.....HERE.......I have successfully downloaded the Z9 firmware 4.0 and I am using my old f mount lenses with and adapter on my Z9. I am experiencing problem using auto capture. It won't allow me to dictate motion near and far distances and it will allow me to do other speed and distance choices. I have had no issues using this lens using firmware 3. Any ideas?
The Distance criteria is available only with z lenses . From the manual:I have successfully downloaded the Z9 firmware 4.0 and I am using my old f mount lenses with and adapter on my Z9. Fortunately he is very good at moving targets. For instructors like Steve, cameras are moving targets.
Maybe autocapture will help him to nail this new kind of targets.I feel bad for Steve.... he never gets any time off!
is it for sure ?fyi - live examples of Auto Capture [and it's coming soon in the Z8]
I read the statement on Nikon USA web page somewhere the day the Firmware launched, but now cannot find it, but it's mentioned in the comments under the Mark Cruz video, and confirmed in this comment by Ricci Chera, Nikon UKis it for sure ?
I did not see this information.
How an image taken with autocapture can be distinguished from an image taken without autocapture. That's the "Unsettled" part. There is no clear definition specifically for this and the current language has not caught up with technology. Like most issues, it will probably become "settled" by case, not statute after a few of these get litigated, contested and decided in Federal Court. My interpretation of the Dec 2014 decision from USPTO is that if a human did not press the button, it cannot be defended if someone other than the photographer uses that picture.
This is fantastic news! I'll do some testing myself on the weekend -- thanks Nimi!
Yesterday was my first opportunity at capturing BIF with Z9 (firmware 4.0). I found AF locked on to birds much smaller in the frame than before and stayed locked on much better, as well. I tested Wide Area (S & L), Auto Area, Custom, and 3D tracking. Quite happy so far.I can confirm from my quick preliminary attempts:
Even in Auto AF mode camera now finds smallish recognizable subject for most common birds in my surroundings (pigeons, magpies...) with relative size of approximately 4-6 AF points.
I find it useful for tracking those birds from long distance. I find that easier than trying to locate them quickly in viewfinder when they are already near enough for a shot.
Curios did you reset your Z9 after the FW upgradeYesterday was my first opportunity at capturing BIF with Z9 (firmware 4.0). No reset. After the firmware installation I checked to ensure my old settings were properly retained, and they were. I then saved those settings to a card I use for that purpose. The camera is working fine.Curios did you reset your Z9 after the FW upgrade
I watched this tutorial on the Auto Capture feature, but found it didn't explain for the Target Area, how to to turn off individual focus boxes - he just did it. The Zoom button works for the whole lot on or off, and I presume off is the red coloured boxes (Zoom -), but can't figure how he had various groups of boxes selected or deselected??
Maybe it’s in the setup guide. Guessing so. I have since discovered that you simply touch the screen over boxes in the Target area that you don't want to be active, they are then masked in red which is inactive!I watched this tutorial on the Auto Capture feature, but found it didn't explain for the Target Area, how to to turn off individual focus boxes - he just did it. No, Nikon download doesn't even have Auto Capture mentioned anywhere! Not updated yet, if ever. But have since found that you simply touch the screen of the boxes you don't want active, to mask them out.Maybe it’s in the setup guide. Guessing so. Nikon download site.
I would doubt it since the Z9 firmware has items that are only applicable to the Z9 body and not the Z8 ... built in GPS different function buttons etc..wonder if Nikon will ever synch the firmware for the Z 8 and Z 9
Not expecting identical, just major functions are the sameI would doubt it since the Z9 firmware has items that are only applicable to the Z9 body and not the Z8 ... built in GPS different function buttons etc..

I was hoping my wife would be okay with the size and weight of the Z8 but when she saw the specs she had me trade in her Z6II on a Z7II instead still to big and heavy for her the Z7II is her limit and her Z50 is her "other" camera. Not expecting identical, just major functions are the same
