Z9 Firmware 4.0 Available

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I have successfully downloaded the Z9 firmware 4.0 and I am using my old f mount lenses with and adapter on my Z9. I am experiencing problem using auto capture. It won't allow me to dictate motion near and far distances and it will allow me to do other speed and distance choices. I have had no issues using this lens using firmware 3. Any ideas?

There is a separate thread on Auto Capture.....HERE.......

I am definitely seeing an improvement in subject detection with 4.0. Just seems to recognise more edge cases such as turned heads etc. Also in low light and also when obscured by twigs etc. Not so much in tracking and fast moving stuff though. Don't know about 3d, I don't personally use it.

The Distance criteria is available only with z lenses . From the manual:

That's the "Unsettled" part. There is no clear definition specifically for this and the current language has not caught up with technology. Like most issues, it will probably become "settled" by case, not statute after a few of these get litigated, contested and decided in Federal Court. My interpretation of the Dec 2014 decision from USPTO is that if a human did not press the button, it cannot be defended if someone other than the photographer uses that picture.
How an image taken with autocapture can be distinguished from an image taken without autocapture.
Even if this is indicated in the metadata, can't it be changed by the user?

This is fantastic news! I'll do some testing myself on the weekend -- thanks Nimi!

Does Nikon recommend the following procedures for updating firmware
1 backup settings
2 upgrade FW
3 Reset camera
4 reload settings

The reason why I ask is I see numerous posts talking about issues after upgrading FW and some responses are reset the camera

I can confirm from my quick preliminary attempts:

Even in Auto AF mode camera now finds smallish recognizable subject for most common birds in my surroundings (pigeons, magpies...) with relative size of approximately 4-6 AF points.

I find it useful for tracking those birds from long distance. I find that easier than trying to locate them quickly in viewfinder when they are already near enough for a shot.
Yesterday was my first opportunity at capturing BIF with Z9 (firmware 4.0). I found AF locked on to birds much smaller in the frame than before and stayed locked on much better, as well. I tested Wide Area (S & L), Auto Area, Custom, and 3D tracking. Quite happy so far.

Curios did you reset your Z9 after the FW upgrade

So today was my first opportunity to actually try out FW 4.0 on my Z9. I located a perched Bald Eagle while I was out, and was able to get relatively close. I would typically start with one of the Wide AF modes, but instead just put it into 3D with subject detection. Based on past experience, I wouldn’t have expected a problem getting a lock, and I did not here as well. If anything it seemed to go to the eye immediately and did not let go. The Eagle then took off and I fired off a relatively long burst. Focus was excellent throughout.

So while this wasn’t as challenging scenario as some, my gut tells me that I do see an improvement in 3D AF performance. I’ll need to evaluate some more, but color me happy! 😎 Again my opinion and YMMV.

I watched this tutorial on the Auto Capture feature, but found it didn't explain for the Target Area, how to to turn off individual focus boxes - he just did it. The Zoom button works for the whole lot on or off, and I presume off is the red coloured boxes (Zoom -), but can't figure how he had various groups of boxes selected or deselected??
Maybe it’s in the setup guide. Guessing so. Nikon download site.

I have since discovered that you simply touch the screen over boxes in the Target area that you don't want to be active, they are then masked in red which is inactive!

Not expecting identical, just major functions are the same
I was hoping my wife would be okay with the size and weight of the Z8 but when she saw the specs she had me trade in her Z6II on a Z7II instead still to big and heavy for her the Z7II is her limit and her Z50 is her "other" camera.

I prefer the larger form factor and I do like the built in GPS for my run and gun birding and so stayed with my 2 Z9's so no Z8 in the family.
