Official Nikon Z8 Launch And Discussion Thread

Questions for Steve:
1. It seems that the sensor is the identical part as the Z9. Can we deduce that the actual dynamic range and also the actual noise floor at ISO 8000 will be the same or could they have made an improvement?
2. They are claiming that they have combined AF Area and 3D together. Did you find that this is true and therefore an upgrade from the Z9?
3. Was all the discussion about eye and animal tracking just marketing or did you find that they have actually improved performance beyond the Z9 v3.1 firmware?
4. If they have actually made real AF acquisition and tracking improvements, has Nikon told you that they will incorporate these in a Z9 next firmware update or will these improvements only be in the Z8?

Thank you Steve for your reports.

Hi Steve,

I´m planning to go for a Z8 from my D500 and Z7. Meanwhile I have these two doubts:
- Can I use my XQD cards in the Z8?
- I have an old AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4 D I-ED (I love this beast!). Will I be able to use it on the Z8 with the FTZ II? I've been use on the Z7 without problems.

Thx a lot!

To help visually fill in some of the detail there is a 35 minute Grays of Westminster Z8 hands on

Grays in the video speculate a 61 MP sensor could be in a Z7 III

Nikon's specification weights are 1 pound 8 oz for the Z7, 2 pound 1 oz for the Z8 and 2 pound 15 ounces for the Z9.

Ricci says 12,000 have been made in the first months production.

I live in a dusty environment. The Z9 has a dual sensor coating that deflects dust. I find this extremely effective compared to using the Z7.

I cannot find any confirmation that the Z8 has this feature.

As I have a Z7 and a Z9 the question for me it is - is it financially worth upgrading the Z7 to the Z8?

i know it's not actual information, but since it appears they are just re-using z9 components in general, it seems odd if they'd go out of their way to make a new sensor assembly just to remove the coating.

i also think it's likely the coatings are there as part of a strategy to combat debris (along with the sensor shield), and they bothered to put the sensor shield on the z8 which would probably have been easier to delete

It definitely is for me…the AF differences and how it works differences and muscle memory differences between the Z7II and the Z9 turned me from a dual body in the field shooter to a dual lens single body shooter and I just move the Z9 body between the 400/.5 with Tc and the 10p-400 as needed because my brain just doesn’t deal with the differences. Preordered the Z8 and wanted it specifically because of the it works like the Z9 and AF performance. I do wonder why it’s a larger body than the Z7II is though…the sensor area is the same but maybe the stacked and BSI stuff along with the better IbIS than the 7 has simply needed more space in the body…otherwise I think it would be Z7 sized.

I hope so!! Not sure if I would sell my D850 because they will probably tank again but I hope not.
Not planning on selling my Z9 either…lose too much value in selling to get a second Z8 unless I had to. Like Steve said in the livestream…and from looking t the specs…this will put me back into the dual bodies in the field camp for short to medium hikes and in a vehicle…but for longer hikes or an afternoon in the park with a single lens for weight the Z8 is lighter…and as I said in another post if the Z8 and Z9 had been introduced at the same prices at the same time…I would have bought the Z8 because I don’t want or need a grip and the loss of Fn3 and shorter battery life are non issues for me. I would still have had the same issue with differences from the Z7II which led to my preorder today from Nikon direct.

Not quite sure why but Nikon UK/Europe took forever to get the non-kit version up on their store for sale today. Got an order in for my wife now. I've been using the Z9 for ages now but she's been on the Z7 and I'm so excited for her to have a Z8 to enjoy. With the 400 4.5 she'll have a killer combo. It'll be very interesting to see what the waiting times are like for this.

Ricci says that 'Nikon' claims the Z8 AF can detect the tiniest person in the frame. Did anyone notice that moment from Ricci?
What is about the Z9?

It's very likely that the Z8 will release with the latest Nikon has to offer in terms of firmware. I think many of us will be expecting a Z9 firmware update relatively soon that aligns them. I expect them to stay aligned from that point forwards given they seem to have near enough identical hardware and performance.
I expect a fw update to the z9 to put it back on top. It honestly makes little sense to have two cameras that vary only by form factor.
