Yes and no. The 200-600 needs a prosumer body for wildlife. That's the Z9 counterpart still to be released. It's a similar philosophy to the D500 with the D5 or the D700 with the D3. The 200-600 will be a terrific lens and will sell very well, but it's not an S lens and has a specific target market.

Nikon has been very thoughtful in terms of their release schedule. The Z9 was not released until they had a suite of f/2.8 zooms, some reasonably fast primes, and long lens options (the 400mm f/2.8 and the 100-400).
would a Z 7 II with firmware rumored to come be sufficient? or will we need to wait for the Z 7 III? Like to set the 200-600 soon, perhaps early this summer (though no likely)

We can all continue to speculate. Numbers as follows:
300mm f/2.8 = 5.6K USD; 400mm PF f/4 = 2K USD; Cost ratio 2.8 with one stop loss
500mm f/4 = 10.3K USD; 500mm PF f/5.6 - 3.6K USD; Cost Ratio 2.86 with one stop loss
800mm f/5.6 - 16.3K USD; 800mm PF 5/6.3 using 2.8 ratio give cost of 5.8K USD which is clearly too low. And the F-mount includes a 1.25x matched TC which adds cost.

Allowing for the lesser drop in cost and the added complexity of focal length, a price of 7K USD gives a ratio of 2.33 or they could even go to 8K USD and still be around 2.0 ratio. I am counting on the lens design and engineering skills to figure this one out. If the price goes too high, just go fo the 400mm w/TCs,
A lower price would lead to skyrocket demand and could pull more people to the Z series cameras. We will see where Nikon chooses to go. Just sayin'.
The 2.3/2.8 ratio assumes loss of a stop. For a 1/3 stop, 2.8 factors drops to 1.6 to 1.8. 1.6 factor is around 10K

Why do they Hi so much?

Do you have an actual number? I don't speak Japanese but I went back and watched the long haired guy with CC turned on like you said. He appeared to say his hand was 20.7 cm and the length was just under two hands. So maybe 16 inches or less which is kinda what it looks like, about the same as a Sony 200-600 with the hood on. That would be sooooo nice.

Two times 20.7cm would be 16.3 inches. I was going by the distance from my finger tip to my elbow which is around 19.5 inches. It's in that range.

The translation of the closed caption showed me the reference to being "lighter than the 500 f/4 weight".

Shorter length makes it much easier to hand hold. All the views seem to indicate you can bend your elbow near 90 degrees while supporting the lens, and that would make it very reasonable to hand hold.

Not in all the markets! In India, 400 2.8 lenses are priced higher than the 600 F4..about a 10% premium for the 400 2.8 across generations.

If it has the 1.4TC it will likely be $1000-$1500 more than the 400S. Just like 600/4 lenses have always been about $1000 more than same generation 400/2.8 lenses. Now if it doesn't have a 1.4 TC than I think it will be the exact same price....creating even more confusing overlap as I mentioned in my previous reply.

I just grabbed fcotterill's image from a few pages back to reiterate that this lens is at most 1" longer than the 400S (assuming this roadmap is now accurate with the real lens pictured). I don't even think it will be a full inch longer. This matches up well with the guy in the CP+ video as it was a little less than 2x his ~20.7cm thumb/finger span. I'd say just slightly less than 16". The 400S is 15". fcotterill's measurment puts it at 15.78". Seems that will be where it falls.

Well, let's see if this turns up! and more importantly if "...the price will be significantly lower than initially anticipated because the new 800mm will be a PF lens:"

i always feel like those "lower than anticipated" statements tend to be based on "expectations" if you didn't understand the context of the product. ie, anticipating a non PF lens, even though we always knew it would be a PF lens.

According to the link they provide when talking about anticipated price, they were guessing $16-17K. I never thought for a second it would ever be that high. I still think around the $10K mark which would be significantly lower than $17K. But to be significantly lower than my long standing $10K guess we would be down into $6K or something. Hard to know what they were trying to get at with that article because we don't really no what is anticipated. I've read everything from $5K to $20K over the web.

I'll take the under/sooner on the announcement date to make it into this fiscal year. But historically, they have been pretty accurate at NR. :)
There's a flurry of activity at a Nikon Europe event in London... prioritizing Z9 apparently. Hence the venue is a big indoor sports arena... and equally ideal place to highlight the Z telephotos. They have the 100-400mm S and 400 f2.8S TC. The perfect opportunity for a big 3rd lens, but this event is described primarily to test the Z9 on a range of active subjects in this velodrome

There appear to be many hoping this 800 PF hits the sweet spot in ergonomics and price (see guesses etc here)! The estimated dimensions, see earlier posts and above, of 387 x 147mm are shorter than the 400 f2.8S TC and close to the 500 f4E FL (140x387mm, 3.1kg), which adds all the more intrigue to how much the PhaseFresnel design can cut its weight.

If the price is near $7000 US, and it’s light enough, I may sell my 500 E. It’s getting too heavy for me. Starting to have elbow pain every time I’m out.

NR has had its moments. Previously they postulated that the 800 PF would be announced around the time of CP+. That has come and gone ..
