My Z8 is affected apparently. The issue is on rare occasions some lenses won’t lock on. I’ve never experienced this with my Z8 but I’d better send it in as it’s a warranty recall and you need to be able to say the thing is perfect if it’s going to be sold at any time…I’m not planning on selling, but in a few years, who knows?

This sounds similar to the issue tha thit a few Z9 bodies in the USA, which was a faulty lens lock part in a small batch -- I spoke with Nikon support in the UK this morning (both my Z8 are affected) and they told me the issue in the Z9 was the button, whereas it is in the locking mechanism in the Z8.

Just notify Nikon (in your territory - so not Australia) that you believe your camera is probably affected and follow their instructions -- DO NOT just turn up and demand a fix. Folk that did this with their Z9 had a very unhappy time in the USA.
Folk that followed the instructions were all happy.

I will try to get both mine done ASAP. Complete the on-line booking process and Nikon will email when they have the parts and are ready to perform the work.

NIKON UK service advisory

The shipping and service/repair are FREE to me - DPD will pick up the parcel on a date good for me AFTER Nikon notify me they are ready.

"In order to minimize your waiting time, your request has been placed in a queue to ensure that parts are available prior to the return of your camera.

When our Service Centre is ready to accept your camera, they will send you an email and will include instructions on how to return your product, no action is required until you receive the email from the Service Centre. You can continue to use the camera until its ready to be sent.

We thank you in advance for your patience"

So let us all just go about this quietly and calmly -- that way you will help us all.

Not just wind everyone up based on NO actual evidence.

KEEP CALM and carry on shooting

I got an email from support saying that they're aware mine is on the list and that as soon as they get the part, they'll contact me and arrange collection. Great, so long as its after I get back fro Svalbard in a couple of weeks.

Mine is affected but I'll be darned if I am shipping it anywhere for however long during this time of the year. If possible this is gonna have to wait till winter 🥶🌨️

Just occurred to me after re-reading the notice. In particular, " in some rare cases, the lens cannot be mounted on the camera because it cannot be rotated to the locked position"
Given I do not have any z-mount lenses as of yet and that the F2Z adapter will stay in place until I do, I wonder if I would ever see this problem.

My Z8 is also affected, tho I have not yet had the problem. This is crappy news..
Q: Who is going to pay for shipping this - insured - to a Nikon Service Center.
A: We are. And it won't be cheap.

I may wait for a few months and ask them to do a CLA in addition to fixing the issue.

EDIT: Nikon USA will supply a UPS shipping label to send the camera back!!!

They do not want our batteries or memory cards.

Here is the USA site for the Service Advisory.

@Patrick M -- I suggest you follow the link above and book your officially so you get a DPD label and are formally in the line/que for the work.

@Geoff_G -- thank you for the calmer edited version of your post AND I am sorry you are alos part of this club.

I also have had no issues with either of my Z8 across a whole bunch of lenses -- Nikon UK said the "issue" was in the locking mechanism this time and not the button - so different to the Z9 issue.

I've decided to get this over with (I have a Z9 for backup...lol).
I processed mine thru the USA site I linked above and generated a packing slip and shipping label.
Fortunately it's just traveling across NYS so 2 day shipping each way.

Mine is also part of the advisory. Currently Travelling in Japan with it — a few days ago my 24-120 Z became unlocked. It came off in my hand (luckily)……. I will get it fixed as soon as I home.

Mine affected, filled out form and received UPS label to service center in New York, I'm on east coast and will send it in Monday and hopefully have it by the following weekend (I have a backup if need be). As mentioned above, instructions are clear - DO NOT include battery or memory card(s) when shipping, all they want is the body placed inside a plastic bag, they do not want original packaging.

Mine is also affected and even though I haven't had the issue it's a good idea to get it fixed asap.

Although not mentioned, If it has possible trouble with the mount and locking mechanism failing to lock that also means up the road it could develop into an issue unlocking and there's nothing worse than not being able to remove the lens. At that point you're sending in both a body and a lens.

I did follow the official link. As I said, Support will contact me when yjey have the part ready.
Filling out my form (using link above for US) they said nothing about waiting for a part, hopefully that means Nikon USA has enough parts (for now), I would hate to send in my body and have it sit at a service center while waiting for a part.

I'll be dropping mine off today. Hopefully I'll get a return estimate early next week once Nikon receives it and logs it into their system.

And yeah, they'd better have the damn parts....

Hi: I had the same problem with the Z8 it worked fine with some lenses but my 24-70 2.8 and my 85/1.8 would not lock completely. I brought the Z8 to Nikon Service in New York and they were not aware of the problem. They asked me to leave the Z8 for evaluation which I did. They repaired it with a 2 day turnaround not counting weekend. Camera is fine now. Nikon service indicated "Elevation Adjustment damaged/broken".

I would check all lenses because my other lenses locked on with no issues. Bob

My Z8 is effected, but my Z9 needs repair the multi button bottom press is broken.
I can’t send in 2 cameras in the hot season. I personally haven’t noticed issues with the Z8 mount.

No clue what to do…

I'd start by reaching out to Nikon but if I was in that situation I'd handle those as two separate service issues. For starters, recalls generally have a specific procedure and timeline to follow based on things like parts availability and how many recall units are being serviced. But also if either camera is currently functional I'd want to hang onto a working camera while the other is being serviced.

IOW, faced with something like this I'd generally get one fixed while using the other and then take care of the second unit and not bundle them up into a single service request.

Just my 2 cents and hopefully you get both issues sorted quickly.

That's what I'm afraid of. I can ship mine today, but if they don't have the parts......
Yep, I would suspect they have the necessary parts but if so do they have enough?
If they don't have the parts, or enough parts, that should be mentioned on the Service Advisory Page. I guess I'm taking a leap of faith they can get it done in a reasonable timeframe.

Hi I had my Z8 fixed last week. I would try your lenses on the Z8 and if the lenses you use the most are not affected I would wait for the initial rush to lessen before sending in. My 24-70 2.8 and my 85 1/8 did not lock in but my other S lenses and F lenses with adopter worked fine. Bob
