Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Mine is affected as well. This sucks because I unfortunately had to sell ALL of my DSLR equipment to finance my move to mirrorless, so I will be without a camera while it's out for service. Hopefully this doesn't take more than a couple weeks. I've never had to send a camera back to Nikon for any reason, so this is new to me....does anyone here have experience with a recall and how long these things typically take?

Mine is affected, but I don't have any issues with the lenses I have at this time. I'll wait for the rush to be over and for a time period where I am not using it daily.

...Though... this could be a good reason to justify a "backup body"... might as well get a Z9 now... :) (J/K... sort of....)

first problem with the Z8 ? Mine seems to be affected...

I talked to Nikon USA today to understand how long the turnaround will be (I have a trip to Alaska in 2 1/2 weeks). They have a standard script for the reps that says wait times depend on incoming orders, but expect 7-10 days required for service, although they will try to expedite. I specifically asked if parts are in stock and the rep said yes. I am not going to take a chance sending it in before my trip, but that leaves me rather uncomfortable. I'll have my Z9, but typically will use 2 bodies and lenses. I also just sold my Z7II last night; so that isn't an option. I will probably bring my wife's OM-1 and 12-100 as a back-up.

I would like a better explanation of the problem- if anyone can answer these questions it would be very helpful:

If the problem specific to a combination of lens and body, or if a body is affected, does it affect mounting all lenses?

Is the problem intermittent or once it occurs will it happen consistently?

Once the problem occurs, does it prevent any use of the body until repaired?

Larry

May be a good idea to save your settings on your card (and on your computer as backup) before sending in, if Nikon has to reset the camera it'll be good to have a .BIN backup to restore all your settings if they do a factory reset. SETUP MENU > Save/load menu settings > Save menu settings
Not a bad idea - I did that. But, I have no reason to believe they'll even fire up the camera. They don't want the battery and don't need it to see if the lens locking pin works correctly after repair. Still backups aren't bad....

If I had a trip coming up I, too, would wait until after the trip especially if I had not experienced any kind of problem. It is a risk either way but when shipping something, having Nikon fix it, and then ship it back to you, there are ample opportunities for delays and simple human error to come in. Murphy's law, if anything can go wrong it will. Jeff's corollary to Murphy's law, "if anything can go wrong, it already has you just don't know it yet." At the end of the day, Murphy was an optimist.

Hope you have a great trip to Alaska. My wife and I were there in 2018 one of my favorite trips ever.

From the instances I read it mainly affected certain lenses but not all. I would think as long as you verify the lens is locked (by trying to take it off without depressing the lens release) you'd be golden.
Not sure I'd send in a camera that isn't experiencing issues 2.5 weeks before a big photo op trip but it would suck if you had an incident where the lens fell off unexpectedly. Tough call.

Just shipped my Z8 off to Nikon Service Center in California. I’m not going take the chance and have that 800 PF fall off. Since I’m leaving next week for a couple weeks to Montana the ol reliable D850 will back up the Z9.

I shipped mine off to the NY office. I don't need 2 cams right now and my Z9 is more than capable...lol.
At least you have a "not too shabby" (lol) D850 backup but hopefully you won't need it.

Hi I discovered this problem several days after receiving my Z8. I received the first batch sent out. It was ok until I tried to mount my 24-70 2.8. I brought it to Nikon Service in NY and they said they never saw this issue. They took the camera into the back and a tech did something and the lens mounted. I went home and tried my other lenses. All mounted ok except for my 85 1.8. I went back to Nikon Service and they asked if they could hold my Z8 to try to evaluated the problem. This was a Wednesday and was told had to wait for a part that would be there on Friday. On Friday received a call from Nikon service that part was received and that I could pick up camera. Since it was late I picked up camera on Tuesday (Monday was a holiday). Camera was repaired with Reason - "Elevation Adjustment Damaged/Broken"

#1 Only affects some lenses most of my S and F mount lens did not have a problem mounting.
#2 It was consistent with the affected lenses all other lenses were fine.
#3 The body is fime to use no issues - I used my 100-400 S, 500PF and 70-200 with no issues. If the lenses you use for Alaska work ok and mount without issues I would take the Z8 to Alaska and send the Z8 when you get back. Thats what I would do just make sure the lenes mounts fully on the camera every time you put it on the camera. Bob

Thanks for posting - a very informative post!!

My Z9 was affected in the Z9 recall. Also my first experience with a camera recall. Though I would have preferred no recall, I appreciated the very fast turn around I received, and that Nikon was up front about the problem and efficiently took care of the problem.

Thanks for the detailed answers. I've tried all of my lenses without a problem, so hopefully that remains true until I get back.

I have a feeling its not the mount.
Nikon found something they want to correct and don’t want to disclose it. They need the physical camera on hand and found a reason to get it.
LOL - you're pretty suspicious. Not sure why they would do that.

I have not had any issues but mine was in the first shipment and is on the list. My serial number is in the first 2000 units. The process is very simple. I packaged my camera as directed and left it with UPS today. I also used an NPS Priority label in case that helps.

I did back up my camera settings before sending it for service.

Mine falls into recall range, and have it packed up to send in, but at the same time none of my lenses (400 4.5, 100-400, 800PF) are having any issues on it, so I may just hold on until winter time when I don't have anything to photograph for 6 months.

Thank you for the reminder to save settings!. Mine is affected and I've been spending a lot of time working on the settings. I will probably send mine in Monday after I back settings up. I'm in New York area so hopefully shipping part of this process should be quick.

I’ve had Nikon reset the settings on a Z camera merely sent in for cleaning and a checkup. I was glad I saved my settings to a card before sending it in.
