Ifootage Cobra 3 monopod

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I am headed out on my trip to BC in one day. I decided to bring it on the trip and give it a solid try.
I would be very surprised if you don’t end up liking it. I’ve taken it out every time I’ve been out the last couple weeks and really like it a lot. If there were anything at all I could add to it, it would be a belt clip like the Gitzo monopod has. I could probably rig up something similar to that on my own. It does have a hand strap, obviously you have it but the Gitzo has a belt clip integrated into that.

are any of you guys with the big prime setups worried that iFootage only rates it for an 11lb payload?

it was my understanding that with tripods, monopods, etc. you usually want to aim for a product that has 2-3x the payload of what you're actually using.

The Sony camera bodies along with a 600 GM are less than 10 pounds. I have carried mine a few miles now over my shoulder on this monopod with no issues. No matter what tripod or monopod I’m using and even handheld, I have mine tethered to my cotton carrier vest in case of a drop.

could you post a pic of how you have it tethered? and if you're always wearing the cotton carrier but not actually using it for the body/600GM, do you have binoculars or other bodies/lenses attached at the same time?

I always go out with two bodies and usually always hike with both on the vest. As you can see I use the peak design connectors. For smaller lenses I use the clips on the body instead of the lens.

That's strange. When I got my iFootage Cobra 2 I was surprised that the carbon fibre version was rated higher than the aluminium one at 10kg which is over 22 pounds:

IIRC the aluminium one was rated at 18pounds but seems now not listed.

I thought it was 22lbs as well

It is 8kg or 17.6lbs
The new strike is the one that is rated at 11lbs

It looks like the Cobra 3 has an 8KG payload, but the Cobra 3 Strike only has a 5KG payload...

I think I'm more interested in the Strike version because the rapid height adjustment is the most alluring aspect. I hate having to try and manipulate monopod height and missing the shot as a result.

The speed in which you can change heights is why I went with the strike. Mine is the older Cobra 2 version. When are you planning on being in Yellowstone?

It's certainly an interesting feature. The Sirui SVM has it too, but it requires a twist knob as opposed to gripping the monopod.

I'll be in Tetons on Sunday, and Yellowstone next Tuesday I believe

Here’s an image I took this morning out in the field with it so you can see what I’m talking about being tethered to my vest.

thank you for the pic! extremely helpful

do you happen to know the model number of the head? googling "RRS tilt head" shows about 10 different options
Once I get back home, I will look at the model and let you know I’m probably going to purchase a quick release top plate for it at some point. I have the one with the knob as shown in the pictures, but I have the quick release plate on one of their ball heads and really like it.

I need to check that out. I have had this one for several years now
I think the MH-02 has been out for a while also. Does the MH-01 allow you to rotate the head and use it with lenses that don't have a foot (mounting on the A/S plate at the bottom of the camera)?

No it just tilts which for me is great because the monopod does all other movements in the pivot point/foot which covers all angles.
