Adobes future credit charges

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

The tiered pricing structure they've set up, at least for the outset seems reasonable, especially since you get some storage with that and the "Standard" features are allowed unlimited usage, though exactly what qualifies as Standard features seems not yet clearly defined...or at least I couldn't find that info in my cursory search of their site.

Give it some time and have no doubt that Adobe will clarify all this by the time the current "no charge" period ends.

Cheers!
What they sort out for photographers will be interesting. If you go to your account two things are noticed. One is it now uses the words “limited time” so at some point I expect to have 250 credits per month or have to buy more. Second when you click on buy more you really see what an intensive use might mean as they give an example.

It might be that some of us are on the edge with the removal tool if we use Generative AI.
My hope is they don’t charge for the cloud masking they just introduced.

As you say time will tell.

Link to generative standard features that at this time use one credit which I think is when you hit the generate button. So you could mask 3 spots in an image and generate once. I am not on my computer so I can’t confirm.

Thanks Hooligan, good info.

While in the process of putting my last post together, I tested whether or not they charge by the Generate press or by the number of masks you've created for items to remove and I confirmed that removing 3 non-contiguous objects hits you for 3 credits with one hit of the "Generate" button. I haven't checked any other features to see how they work as I have little to no interest in most of them.

I do a fair amount of product photography for a couple local companies and most of it is studio work shooting on a black or white background, stripping out the background to have the product and often some shadow on a transparent background for web use or in print brochures. As good as the current object selection is, I often have to go in and deal with small areas manually, which is time consuming on some items. The AI removal seems to be much improved and worthwhile, but I need to go back to some of my original shots and do some testing. If it save substantial time, it would be a no-brainer and worth the cost of the basic package.

I think the advanced masking I referenced is PS only at this point.

Good to know on the spots. My cats will refuse to get a Dalmatian for sure now. Probably how @sh1209 used so many credits.

We have varying opinions on the subject and that’s fine. I think whenever a person is paying a subscription, they should have access to everything within that subscription and nothing is going to change my mind on that. I enjoy the Adobe programs and I’ve used them for many years. I’ve never really minded paying the subscription because it always gave me access to the latest and great software, so that’s what I expect in the subscription is to get the latest and greatest.

Steve,

I understand your point and I think that's something that Adobe is trying to figure out as they go through this rollout period, refine the tools and get a handle on the usage patterns for these new tools...and the impact on their infrastructure to handle it.

While you can very easily check your balance from within an App, one or two clicks, depending on the App. At some point soon, I'm sure the current balance will be shown directly in Apps and updated with every use.

While I haven't really used any of the AI features until the last few days, I can tell you that when using the AI remove feature, credits are deducted for every individual object you select for removal, not how often you press the "Remove" button...I just tried that and that's the granularity of it. Remove your one twig (one contiguous mask area) and that's one credit, remove 10 twigs in different areas of an image (10 individual masks), but only one press of "Remove" and that eats 10 credits, same as if you'd done each individually. While I'm sure they could reduce the granularity of their credit value, but monitoring the processing time of each task and accumulating that value for every user would seem to have it's own overhead compared to just tracking individual processing requests and doing a "flat rate" that averages out...in Adobe's favor, of course.

Thanks!

So one image, and I select a 20 people to be removed, then one click to remove them all, and that’s 20 credits even when I use Remove with one click? I haven’t used it yet.

That’s not right at all in my opinion, not one bit.

so that’s what I expect in the subscription is to get the latest and greatest.
Same!

You own an auto body shop and offer a great deal, any dent removed for $50...you bring in a car with 5 dents and want them all removed for the same price because I'm not bringing the car in 5 times??? I think we'd all like to live in your universe! :)

That is absolutely in no way the same scenario. Any subscription I have and pay for isn't pick and choose. Just like Final Cut Pro on my iPad, I have unlimited access to all features with unlimited use. Final Cut Pro on Mac, same thing. I also have DXO which yet again is unlimited use of ALL features! If you're happy handing money to Adobe then that's fine but some of us are not.

Steve,

Yes, it appears we do have varying opinions, but do think about this. I've had a love/hate relationship with Adobe and their pricing/licensing practices since the mid-90's, so no love lost here. Many things about how they work to complain about, but the photography plan is not one of them...in performance or value for the money. I was skeptical of them going to subscription plans for everything, but it they're track record of innovation and improvement on the products I use has been a welcome surprise.

For companies and professionals using Adobe products, it's just a CODB...they want reliability and a single source of accountability, price is pretty much irrelevant. Me, I'm retired now and I have to pay my own way, so I'm way more value oriented than when the company was paying my All Apps CC subscription for year.

It's stunning to me that Adobe has maintained the price of the photography plan as long as they have and made so many enhancements to the programs on a continuing basis. It seems to me that what you're actually saying is that you're willing to see the price of the photography plan increase for EVERYONE so some can have these new features that require a substantial investment in development AND backend processing that you're not sure you'll use extensively. And trust me on this, the base price would be raised if they didn't make it an option in the way that they have. Sorry, I'm sure you're a great guy, but I don't want to pay for your free lunch. :)

Cheers!

I honestly wouldn't mind even if the had tiers to be honest. Like one for no AI, moderate AI and unlimited. I honestly wouldn't mind paying a few more bucks per year to have a few extra credits. For instance raise the monthly price to $12.99. That to me seems to be a better option.

Whaaaaat? Have to check this out. Like you I don't use specific AI tools tho recently was playing around with the remove tool. Surely (I say in jest) the world of user charges per specific tool is not upon us!! Sigh.

That's exactly what they're doing! Have you not checked their pricing page?

With the Standard program add-on to the Photography plan or other app, you get unlimited access to the "Standard" features that Hooligan listed above. The "Premium features have monthly limits.

Here is the current offering...and you can use it month by month and activate or cancel as needed for $9.99/month or pay a one-time $99.99 for a year of service.

Well any body shop I used and mechanic only had one person working on each issue in serial.

Are you telling me that when I click once, all 20 people are being removed serially or in parallel?

Yes, you can select (mask) multiple objects (people, dogs, cats, rocks, twigs, whatever) in a wide view of an image and process them all with one click, but the credits used are related to individual objects processed, not the click. If the objects are small and you have to zoom in the image to identify them accurately, then you can do that and handle each one as a separate "Remove" process...credits used will be the same. The Remove tool now has an option to use Generative AI or not...as well as the option of what sort of fill to apply when the object is removed. You'll have to experiment, just as I've started doing.

To answer your specific question about serial or parallel...each object as defined by a mask is considered one process. If you can select 20 people that are all standing together with one contiguous mask, then that would be one credit. If you want to take out 3 people out of 20 and you have to create 3 individual masks because they're not standing next to each other, then that could all be done with one click, but it would cost you 3 credits. Does that help?

No thanks! No way in hell would I ever pay triple the price to use any tool. There are plenty manual tools that work just fine. That is insane to me

Thanks, very helpful. I figured but wasn't sure a group of something selected as one mask be one "use", thanks for confirming.

In the video I saw, and it's been months, I thought when the people were removed (for example, my need too), the background was automatically filled in, like people against stone, the background would be filled in with stone. So 1 group of people- 1 USE for credit deduction, and filling in the background automatically by the SW, is a second USE so another credit/s deduction? UGH. The video didn't go over credits, and the video was made before it was released to public.

Is there a credit calculator to tell you how much you are using BEFORE you commit, sort of like a shopping card, you know how much $ you are about to spend if you agree to it. IF not that is crappy, and done so on PURPOSE.

I am guessing Adobe is evaluating all the data and will adjust the plans to reflect the usage. Photography plan could end up different reflecting that groups usage. A heavier user might have to buy more credits to reflect that and not impose it on all.
That would certainly be best IMO. Like I said, mine got maxed out because I left the remove tool in Automatic in PS and Generative fill enabled in LRC. I am very aware of this now and will only use whenever it's needed. It's still very strange to me that the only information offered is, you've maxed out the number of credits. Even Adobe agents can't tell you how many have been used.

Yep, I remember in the video I watched the presenter made the distinctiing about clicking a box to use or not use the credit scheming based Adobe AI.

The lack of credit data is done so on purpose. The fact a rep couldn't tell you is disgusting. That would be like your cell phone company being unable to tell you how many minutes you have used. They KNOW exactly how many you used.

why not burn them while the extra is free

I intend to, I've been lining up my tourist shots that have tourist in them- who knew tags would have been useful hah. It will give me an idea how capable the AI is vs doing it manually. If I recall you, if you remove an object, and change your mind and want it back, those uses more credits? It's not like selecting undo, and you get them back w/out a credit deduction, right?

Where are you coming up with triple the price? I pay $9.99/month for the Photograph Plan and if I chose the Firefly Standard plan that's another $9.99/month or equivalent $8.33/month if I paid the one-time yearly rate of $99.99.

As for your credits used/available, open your Adobe Account page that you'll find a link to in the "Help" tab of your App, Click Manage My Account, then when your account page opens, at the top right, click your profile photo or the circle there next to the bell and grid icons and it will open this window that shows your credits. It may be that the standard Photography Plan will include 250 credits at no charge on an ongoing basis without buying one of the Firefly plans, but not known for sure.
