Here is what I use - I have multiple Windows computers. Each computer has at least one external Western Digital drive with a capacity of 12 or 14 TB. All computers are on a network with file sharing enabled. No matter which computer I use, I have access to all the others. I keep all photos on each external drive. Keeping the various drives in sync is not an issue. I use Beyond Compare to keep the drives in sync. Weekly, I take one of the drives offline and give it to a friend as an offsite backup and I do the same for him. If I lose a drive on one computer (which has never happened), I can recover all files from one of the other computers. If the house burns down I have a backup with the friend.
