Two magnificent shots. It is challenging to choose which of the two is better. Both show extraordinary care in composition.
In this case, the idea of using a zoom lens was a winner.
With a fixed focal length, considering the difficulties of the place, having these two shots at a short distance time would have been much more difficult.

Fantastic! (y)

Thanks so much!

For sure. People sometimes avoid zooms, but everything has its place. I had a 400 2.8 sitting in the bag while I used the 200-600. The 400 2.8 by every measure is a superior lens save one - it doesn't zoom :) The zoom was absolutely essential for these shots.

Very very nice. Both photos are beautifully executed
Thank you!

Thanks - Just oxpeckers looking for bugs. They were really out in force that evening though
I'm finally posting photos again! :)

We were fortunate to come across a pair of cooperative giraffes last year while running one of our Africa workshops. We spotted them early and weren't sure if they would stay until sunset. Still, we stayed to find out just because we knew the payoff would be huge if they did - nothing like a giraffe silhouette at sunset! Sometimes patience pays off :)

wonderful images !!

Steve, that first image is nothing short of amazing!
Having a Giraffe silhouette at sunset with birds lining the neck would have made for an amazing enough image, seeing its neck arc around the sun takes the shot to a whole different level. One could not have choreographed a better shot... speaks to the power of pre-thinking the shot one wants and finding a way to make it happen. Bravo to you and your guide for being in the right place and sticking with it!

We’re familiar with these images from your earlier publication of them… and they’re still stunning. Great to see you get the recognition you so well deserve, Steve. Such careful and artistic work. 😊
