Nikon “refurbished” - yes or no?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I've bought used, new and refurbished Nikon glass and have "so far" never had any issues. I did buy the 70-200 f2.8 FL Ed latest lens on Nikon's site during a reburb sale and it's been awesome. If you're really worried about the warranty, think about how many times you had to use it. I'm sure some have had to, but I've never had an issue with Nikon equipment for over 30 years! That's why I buy Nikon and not for their warranty!

I am contemplating purchasing the 70-200mm 2.8E FL ED VR and Nikon is offering it refurbished at about a $400 discount. As far as I can tell, the warranty goes from one year down to 90 days which is concerning as I will obviously not know why Nikon received my lens back and what they did to it to remedy any issues with it. Any recommendations or knowledge on buying refurbished direct from Nikon would be appreciated. Thanks!

Buy New, Period. Your expensive trip could be ruined should an issue reoccur.
Refurbished is a game and a long story, yes there are some products that are reworked from being factory rejects.

The warranty goes from 5 years to 90 days. Nikon lenses are warranty for 5 years their bodies are one year.

If they've changed that then I may be wrong but I got this warranty that said if you register your lens you get an extra 4 years. I'm sure that if that warranty card is in your possession they will still have to warranty it even if they don't offer it to new lens buyers. I bought mine last July. It's the best lens that I have and I have all Nikon lenses.

I also believe the 5 year warranty in US is now gone. As I understand it old stock may retain 5 year warranty, but any new stock shipped by Nikon is 1 year warranty .
You are correct. I purchased a new 105 2.8 micro came with a 1 year warranty, dealer just received it. Just purchased a 500pf 5 year warranty card enclosed. Contacted Nikon was told that since the 5 year warranty card was enclosed that Nikon would honor it. Also stated that she would put a comment in the system regarding our conversation. I’m going to make sure to keep track of that 5 year warranty card.

I only buy refurbished or used, never new. Have not been burned yet in several years.

Same here (y). I can hardly remember having bought something new if it comes to cameras or lenses. With stuff on this cost level it is just like with new cars. As soon as you have driven it off the dealers's yard it lost its first 10% :D. In extreme cases the price differences were big enough to be able to compensate for getting something fixed at own cost. And if you are a bit careful buying from private persons can be even more cost effective. The nice thing with this hobby is that at least most people seem to like their equipment and pay attention to it, so the risk is relatively low, especially thinking about part of the target groups for pro level gear. They sometimes have to give a really hard time to their gear just to get the job done. I had the chance to get in contact with a guy doing motor sports and one of his jobs was following the WRC around the world for years. I certainly would not have bought gear from him, because it was shaken during offroad rides, got "washed" and bombed with mud, sand, gravel, ... but it showed me what kind of abuse this pro level gear can take while still work flawlessly for years.

Don't get me wrong, I am still careful with my gear to keep it working and to conserve its value in case I want to sell it, but I became a lot less hesitant to buy second hand and tend to be less "scared" in using it under critical conditions.

If you go and buy used and get caught by a seller trying to cheat you, IMHO that's just bad luck. I am happy to say that it never happened to me up to now (knocking on wood while writing this) and am convinced that one gets what (s)he deserves. In other words, being as realistic and honest as possible when selling gear is already part of the protection against untrustworthy sellers, because the way you present your stuff reflects the way you would expect others to present theirs to you and you look at it with different eyes. Add some horse sense to it and you are pretty safe. The rest is just normal risk of life ;).

BTW @Capturingtheunseen.com , thanks again for decision support a couple of months ago. I still love my D4s and I haven't regretted buying it - USED off course (y) - a single day and pairs nicely with my gripped D850. Its great time comes especially when I can't sleep and get out well before sunrise or I forget to go home in the evening. It's a bit like in the Johnny Walker adverts " The light goes, the D4s comes" :D.

Nikon did revise it's warranty strategy on a global level. What was for example 3 years in Switzerland is now just 1 year (confirmed by Nikon over the telephone).

As for buying refurbished, I can only share my experience with the 70-200 F4.. bought it new, sent it 3 times for repair before it was replaced (because I insisted either to get a new one or get my money back). I have a feeling they will resell it as refurbished, but it begs the question: if they failed to fix it 3 times, how can they sell it as refurbished. Since then I decided not to consider refurbished anymore. I rather buy second hand, from a Person who had used the lens for some time.. this way early defects are ruled out, and long term defects will not happen during the short warranty period. Hope this helps.

Very good point there! Thanks.

I did buy my D850 refurbished from Nikon long before I wrote this thread. And funny thing is I checked the shutter count when it arrived and it was 4! So that really confused me. I took one shot to check shutter so that leaves three before I got it as a refurb. Was it DOA to first owner? I haven’t had a single issue with it but it’s always made me wonder.

A friend just purchased a refurb 850 from Nikon with a shutter count of 0. He asked how that could be, could be several things. They could have replaced the shutter (or other component) and reset to 0 or they could be resetting everything as there was some static a while back from people buying refurbs with shutter counts ranging all over the place. Some were sending them back complaining that they wanted cameras with lower shutter counts. Would not surprize me if they are now resetting all refurbs to avoid the backlash. OTOH, could have been a unit sold, the buyer took a couple of shots and decided to return it, we'll never know if there was a valid defect or just personal choice.

I am late to the party but I have posted some photos taken hand held with the refurbished 600mm F/4 E I bought from Nikon. I bought it for 2 reasons they had the 10% off refurbished sale going, no tax free shipping and no one but Nikon had a new or refurbished that I could find here in the US and Nikon only had one refurbished. I was considering renting one from LensRentals and then buying if it was a good copy but their probable price was higher than Nikon refurb on their sale. As noted I have no idea why they had the lens but since they Nikon currently hav a 14 day return policy (shorter than B&H 30 day) so I bought it. It arrived with out the tripod foot but in checking with @Steve he said it was essentially useless. It also did not have the key to the hard case. I contacted Nikon and they did not have the foot or key available to send as replacements and they could only offer to send me an RMA for pre paid return of the lens and a full credit. They said they had no way of knowing when or if they would have another refurbished or new lens. Because the lens so far has been excellent I kept it.

Well said Woodpecker!

I've bought refurbished and used a fair amount. One of the advantages of Nikon gear is the huge amount of high quality used equipment out there at a fraction of the cost of new. Especially with long lenses the last fifteen years or so are often just as good optically as the new ones and don't cost as much as a used car. In the course of doing this I've had one problem, a 35mm f2 that had oil on the aperture leaves. They replaced it.

I have bought several camera bodies and lenses from Nikon USA refurbished site. Most of them have had minor flaws that have been fully restored but obviously can’t be sold as new. I always check their refurbished site especially around the holidays bc they will have a 10 or 20% off sale.
I think they have a 90 day warranty and check your credit card, many will double a warranty.
