Nikon 180-600 Official Announcement / Discussion Thread

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

FWIW I asked my dealer if they had a long waiting list for the 180-600 and he said no, not really, which I found a little surprising. Apparently they have a lot of customers looking to trade-in their "third party" superzooms for the new Nikon, but the used market for those is saturated and they won't take them on trade. So, many of their potential customers are holding off buying until they can sell their existing gear.
This is the exact reason I was glad I was able to sell my 200-500 when I did. I knew market for it would drop once the 180-600 was announced. Even refurbed 200-500 from Nikon dropped to like $800.

Anyone heard of when in August this lens might ship? I leave for Alaska on 8/19 and I'm just assuming there is zero chance I receive my lens in time, but I can hope and dream.

FWIW, all I got form Nikon was that it was shipping in August, no specifics. I'm not sure if new info is out that, but that's the last I heard. I'm hoping for earlier rather than later :)

Your departure date is my hope it gets here before then date. It is my birthday and I have a special flycatcher class field trip that day in a mountain location that a variable focal length lens can come in very handy. Sure hope we get them before 8-19.

Someone on DPR claimed a shop was going to get their shipment july 30th, so there's that. I have no idea what the source was of that (or how true it is), but that's a clue. I'm expecting early august, based on what I was told by my local store (though if they'll get enough for everyone is a different question, I know of at least 4 people who want one).

According to Adorama it will start shipping on 8/30/2023

Our closest "local" store is now a 4.5 hour drive away with good weather and no construction :) I have had one on order from the same mid sized store in CA that has a small online presence since 8-2-22. As far as I know I am the first NPS customer in line there. They did not have a delivery date yet other than August, the last time I checked.

Like I said, I don't know a hard date. As mentioned, adorama has the 30th, but that seems to conflict with other info I've gotten (which could be wrong either way). I'm not expecting one until September either way, so I'm not going to be upset regardless. I just always hope for sooner. I'd love to have the lens for the airshow and some other stuff coming up

I ordered directly from Nikon on their website, not sure how they prioritize orders directly to them over orders through stores. Adorama's website does say it starts shipping on 8/30/23, but no other website has a shipping date displayed, including B&H and Nikon's own website, which is very strange. I'm hoping Adorama is wrong, but it what it is. I didn't really have expectations for Nikon actually delivering anywhere near their advertised shipping date. I think the quick order fulfillment on the Z8 has got peoples hopes up that Nikon can actually deliver new products in a timely fashion.

I had a question regarding a different order at B&H and decided to ask just to see what they said. The B&H Customer service rep said they have a rough estimate for delivery at 8/4/23, but expect the actual date could be later. The mystery continues.

Interesting. I wonder if this is because nikon didn't want to over promise anything, and is hoping to surprise us all by getting them out early in good numbers.

My guess is that they wanted to get an idea of how many pre-orders they get and will tweak release date based on how many orders they received and how many they can produce. They aren't out of stock until they release the lens and then they want to minimize that to avoid bad press. Easier to push release date out than it is to explain why they can't keep up with demand. I'm sure they know the lens is going to be a big seller, they just don't know how big and don't want to get caught like they were with a few others.

Placed my pre-order yesterday (hoping NPS will make up for my lack of decisiveness 😂 ). I've been looking to fit the whole between my 70-200 and 600 F4G and I've been waffling between this, the 100-400, and 400 4.5. Finally decided on the 180-600.

The price was just too good for the extra reach over the 100-400, even if a slight drop in aperture and sharpness. I think my main use case is going to be a casual walk around birding lens over my 600 F4, especially when I'm birding with friends it'll be nice to be able to snap some shots and not hold up the group setting up tripods, etc. It will also be a great video lens for me. Having the internal zoom is clutch for balancing on video heads, and having the huge zoom range is great for getting multiple perspectives on a scene.

Definitely won't replace my 600 F4, but will be a great companion

A pro friend of mine who has an historically reliable inside source with Nikon USA received info that they will ship from Nikon USA to shops in late July.

Other than Adorama showing a specific date of Aug 30th, the only other store I found with a specific date was Vistek in Canada saying Aug 24th. Seems a very specific date to be just a placeholder??? Vistek is one of the biggest (maybe the biggest) camera store chains in Canada.

Maybe a Canada thing?

But also, why would two huge retailers have different dates? I feel like nikon probably told people end of August for worst case, but they'd try to get them earlier.

I'm guessing, of course. I have no sources or inside info (but I wish I did)

Still got my d500 and d5. Planning to pre-order this lens of course I need a

Mount Adapter FTZ II. Will this lens change my IQ?

Why would it?

I'm also not sure if you're confused about what the ftz does, is, or if you're thinking somehow you can mount this lens to your older cameras.

I'd also recommend searching for the many other topics that have been made about this subject

If Nikon has not announced a release date then I'm assuming all retailers are just making educated guesses. That is why they are all different. Their systems are probably set up to require a release date. I still think Nikon is going to float the release date based on how many preorders they get and how many they can have in stock on release date. If that wasn't the case then why not make date official already.

You are probably right. Usually B&H is the only store I see accurate dates on well before release and since they aren't listing a date yet I think everyone is just guessing. Adorama probably just put Aug 30 as that is the latest it could be as Nikon said August. Not sure where Vistek is getting that date. Canada could be slightly different than US but usually it is the same although we have had a few releases earlier than US but that is rare.
