I haven't posted in a while. I recently sold my 400TC and 'downgraded' to 600PF as my only 'birding' lens after recognizing that 2.5 year old toddler will be a major time sink and I won't have as much time for wildlife in the next bunch of years. :D

I'll revisit the 'big prime' one day. :)

Excellent captures... 600pf doesn't seem like much of a downgrade for these images! :)

Luke you need to start a Toddlers with Plena thread. I think that qualifies as THE wildlife. Great shots.

That’s crazy! Why is the exchange rate so horrible?

Fantastic shots, Luke! In your hands, the 600PF is not a downgrade from the 400 TC.

Thank you for all the kind words. :) I miss the TC at times but at the same time all those shots were captured during my local dog walk and I don't mind carrying 600PF vs the big one. :) As for the Toddler Plena album - I have one with hundred of shots but we responsibly decided not to plaster our kid's face all over social media. :)

I understand your love of the 600 PF. I recently spent 2 weeks in Panama with my new 600 PF and came away stunned by the image quality when shooting in rain and low light that forced my ISOs higher than I would have liked! I, too, sometimes regretted not have my 600 TC with me........but those thoughts quickly faded as I hand held the 600 PF and quickly moved to a new location, dropped to my knees and captured a new image before the bird flew away......all the while not tethered to a big tripod!

Today, I was out running a stalkcutter over the cotton ground from this past years crop. As I was doing so i was watching a couple of Coyotes walking around the field. After finishing the field I decided to see if i could get close enough to the coyotes for some photos. When I got closer I saw that both were lying down relaxing. When I got within about 200 yards away, one got up and started walking away from me. However, the other one was just stayed on the ground relaxing. I got about 100 feet away from him. I stopped the tractor but already had the door to the cab open. Sometimes I have a little trouble getting a sharp photo with the tractor running. I killed the engine and got several photos before deciding to get down and see if he would then move. After a few moments he did get up and started walking away.

Now you might ask why I disturbed him. I was about 1/4 of a mile from my home and we here them yipping every night very close to the house. We have chickens and pets around the house so I needed this guy to know that this was my territory. I marked the place very close to some scat I saw on the ground. He will know that smell now and no not to get too close to my house.

On another note, I think these are two coyotes that were born last spring. I have seen them a couple of times.

The Hawk in the pictures is a very light colored Red Tailed Hawk.

Hoping to get my 600PF back from Nikon soon... in the ~15 months that I've owned this lens, it has been at repair for 3 of those months. Crazy. I'm not as pressed about it this time since it's the dead of winter here and I'm not doing any birding anyway 🥶 Glad to see more people joining the club though!

in for repair 3 times?? Wow .care to explain? I haven't heard of many issues with this particular lense. Thanks
